Wood Transmission & Distribution Ltd is accepting applications from Electrical Engineering students as part of our Year in Industry placement scheme to join the HV Cable Design team across the UK based in Horsham, West Sussex and/ or Glasgow starting in September 2025.

The role

The Year in Industry placement opportunity provides flexibility as a hybrid role, working between home and our Horsham and/ or Glasgow offices. This role is perfect for those students currently studying the 2nd year of a degree in Electrical Engineering whereby it is a course requirement to undertake a placement year during or after their studies.

Within Transmission and Distribution, we are installing new and upgrading infrastructure to connect new generation and ensure a safe and secure supply to a changing population. The growth in this area is unprecedented since the levels of grid development in the 1950’s and 60’s and will support a new generation of engineering professionals.
What you will do
As an Electrical Cable Design placement student, you will have exposure to different elements of HV cable design and construction gaining vital skills within the energy transition sector. You will have opportunities to gain a fundamental understanding of HV cable design supporting construction and procurement on a variety of projects.
At the end of your placement, you will be perfectly placed to join Wood's sector leading graduate program completing your studies with industry experience that will help you accelerate your career at the cutting edge of the Energy Transition sector as an Electrical Cable Engineer.

Who we are looking for
We are looking for high-achieving students with a desire to learn – the ideal candidates should be studying Electrical Engineering, enjoy problem solving/ troubleshooting, detailed analysis, willing to embrace new ideas, and most importantly; take on assignments where the approach or solution isn’t known at the outset.
Essential
- Must be studying the 2nd year of your degree in Electrical Engineering whereby it is a course requirement to undertake a placement year during or after your studies.
- Must have the right to work in the UK.
- High achieving undergraduate with the desire to learn who enjoys problem solving, troubleshooting, detailed analysis, be willing to embrace innovative ideas, and most importantly take on assignments where the approach or solution isn't known from the outset.
- Enthusiasm to work and develop your career as an Electrical Cable Engineer.
- Demonstrate initiative, tenacity, and excellent communication skills.
- Possess an ability to learn quickly and be adaptable and flexible to match business requirements.
- Ability to work in multi-disciplinary team environments.
