Are you looking for a new opportunity where you can play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future? If so, and you are passionate about water quality, driven by scientific curiosity, and eager to make a positive impact, then this is the perfect opportunity for you.

Whether you’re an experienced Process Scientist or a Trainee Scientist looking to gain further skills, we want to hear from you!

This role involves a mixture of office and field-based working and will see you travelling in and round the Bath and North-East Somerset area. A car benefit will be provided for your travel requirements.

The role

As a Wastewater Process Scientist, you will ensure compliance with quality standards at water recycling centres, including numerical, descriptive, flow and waste permits.

You will plan and install measures to improve quality and lead initiatives to reduce operational costs and minimise pollutions.

Additionally, you will be involved with the following:

  • monitoring and optimising the effectiveness of sewage treatment processes
  • optimising the use of treatment chemicals
  • providing process support in urgent operational issues
  • provide technical support to operational staff to protect and maintain quality
  • innovate new operational practices
  • liaising with various internal and external stakeholders, including the Environment Agency.

What do I need

We are looking for either an experienced Process Scientist, who has experience monitoring and optimising processes to meet regulatory permits, or a Trainee Scientist looking to develop their skills within the industry along a great career path where you will develop and learn new skills.

You are going to be joining a very welcoming and a supportive team. You’ll need to be able to build professional and supportive relationships with your fellow colleagues, as well as being able to confidently engage with and influence various internal stakeholders.

Previous water industry experience would be ideal. However, we know that there are great waste treatment scientists who work in other sectors such as manufacturing, environment and FMCG companies, who could transfer their process science experience into the water industry.

In addition to a degree or equivalent in an environmental, scientific, or engineering subject, applicants will have:

  • the ability to work alone and as part of a team while problem solving, planning, and prioritising work effectively
  • well-developed data analysis skills, including Microsoft Office applications
  • an understanding of environmental law and knowledge of wastewater treatment processes
  • environmental sampling and/or analytical experience
  • understanding of the importance of environmental regulations and pollutions, while acting as a role model for health and safety
  • attained or committed to working toward membership of a relevant professional body.

Due to the nature of this role, you will need to hold a valid driving licence and car benefit will be provided.

Benefits for you

  • Pension - up to 20% combined contribution
  • 25 days’ holiday rising to 28 with length of service
  • Opportunity to buy and sell up to five days’ holiday
  • Life assurance (four times your salary)
  • Flexible working
  • Cashback and discounts from over 1,200 retailers
  • Paid volunteering day
  • Enhanced maternity leave
  • Health and wellbeing programme
  • Support from mental health first aiders
