CNN internship programme

As one of the world's news leaders we are interested in creative and energetic people with diverse perspectives and talents. Our global team creates content consumed by millions of people every day, and with tectonic changes in the world, news and impactful storytelling are more important now than ever. A successful CNN intern is committed to quality journalism, has strong knowledge of international issues, a keen interest in the digital media landscape, and a sharp eye for the stories that spark conversation on a daily basis.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside a team of dedicated and experienced journalists, attend regular editorial meetings and participate in the editorial process.

We offer 14 internships at our central London Bureau. We are looking for CNN's future: people with fresh ideas, innovative viewpoints, a willingness to work hard, and a commitment to the highest standards of journalism.

The internships are designed for journalism graduates or candidates from a related field seeking a career in journalism.

Your role accountabilities…

  • Primary responsibilities include research, fact-checking, transcribing footage, assisting on shoots, contributing story and show ideas, attending planning and creative meetings and sourcing images and footage.

Available opportunities

CNNi Productions (Features TV & Digital)

The CNNi Productions team produces content across TV and digital for our feature series, such as Call to Earth, Inside Africa and Quest’s World of Wonder. Interns will help with researching and planning stories, as well as writing scripts and articles. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for a story, strong organisational skills, an ability to multi-task, and a good understanding of both TV and digital platforms.

Interview Content Producing & Guest Booking

The content producing (or planning) internship is right in the heart of the newsroom and central to CNN’s coverage of breaking news stories. The main role of the planning desk is to find and secure the most compelling, interesting and relevant voices across the world to give insight into the top stories of the day. The ideal candidate will have an eye for a strong interview idea, excellent organisational skills, good logistical sense (to get guests to the right place at the right time), acute attention to detail, quick to learn, adaptable and overall a great team player. The planning desk can be fast-paced and intense during breaking news, with periods of downtime which allow for forward planning.

Business

An amazing opportunity to play a key role in two of CNN’s flagship shows, First Move and Quest Means Business. The business intern will join our newsgathering team in London to help with guest booking, forward planning and editorial research. There will also be opportunities to write digital business stories and go on business newsgathering shoots. The will also help with our monthly business show Marketplace Europe. Digital News

Our intern will be assigned to the digital news team, which creates content consumed by millions of people every day – from dynamic breaking news coverage to hard-hitting feature journalism. The intern will work alongside a team of dedicated and experienced journalists, attend regular editorial meetings and participate in the editorial process. There will be opportunities to hone your researching skills, sharpen your news writing, contribute to CNN’s newsletters, develop pitch ideas and report out longform features. A successful digital news intern is committed to quality journalism, has strong knowledge of international issues, a keen interest in the digital media landscape, and a sharp eye for the stories that spark conversation on a daily basis. 

Digital Programming

Our intern will be assigned to the global programming team, which curates our homepages and mobile app. This team sits at the sharp end of our output – right at the point where our journalism meets our audience. There will be opportunities to hone your headline-writing skills, learn how to write engaging push alerts, and edit some of our key landing pages. There will also be opportunities to pitch to the news team – so you have the chance to finish your internship with a collection of bylines. The successful candidate will have solid news judgment, good writing skills, and sharp eye for how stories should be presented.

CNN Style

The Style intern will gain experience working as part of the Style team, covering a range of topics across arts and culture, fashion, beauty, design and luxury. Responsibilities will include research, reporting and writing stories for various digital CNN platforms. The successful candidate will have a strong and broad knowledge of Style’s key subject areas. They will understand digital journalism, have a meticulous eye for detail and be able to work under pressure. This internship is well-suited to someone who has studied digital journalism, or who has comparable experience, and who wants to pursue a career in digital journalism.

The internship

  • Salary: £28,000 p/a (pro-rata)
  • Contract Length: 6 months
  • Start Date: Likely to be 2nd September 2024
  • You will gain hands-on experience working on business-critical projects. 
  • You will have access to personal and professional development courses, executive speakers’ series, special screenings and more. 
  • You will be part of our Early Talent network of over 100 interns & apprentices, meaning you will have an important support network of other students, graduates and apprentices and plenty of opportunities to socialise!  

Next steps

  • Stage 1: Submit your CV by Sunday 16th June (you will not be able to apply after this date). 
  • Stage 2: For eligible candidates, you will be invited to complete a written questionnaire in HireVue. The deadline for this is Sunday 23rd June.
  • Stage 3: Interviews will take place in July & August.

Hybrid Working - This role is advertised as a Hybrid work model, that combines remote and in-office work, following our current company policy and to be agreed with your Line Manager. Subject to any applicable laws, WBD / your Line Manager reserves the right to change this working agreement where this is essential to business needs and upon reasonable notice to you.
