The SharkScape project is seeking a Research Assistant for a 1-year post to support this exciting new research programme funded by the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS). Our Research Assistant will get to work across project partners including the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, the Scottish Association of Marine Science, the University of the Highlands and Islands, the Orkney Skate Trust, the University of Aberdeen, Marine Directorate Science, and NatureScot. The post-holder will be responsible for the compilation, synthesis, and geospatial analysis of existing data from multiple sources on human activities and occurrences and distributions of sharks, skates, and rays (elasmobranchs) to the west of Shetland and in the northern and central North Sea regions. This post is full-time (35 hours per week) in person, and may require overnight travel within Scotland to work with project and external collaborators. There is also the potential to gain fieldwork experience during the year, subject to opportunities.
The salary for this post is £34,132 to £39,355 per annum.
Your skills and attributes for success
- BSc degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Marine Biology, Zoology or similar (2:1 minimum) (Desirable).
- Experience using GIS (ArcGIS and/or QGIS) and coding in R
- Excellent communication skills in English (reading, written, oral)
- Research experience in ecological analyses including statistics
- Research experience in data compilation and synthesis
