EDINA at The University of Edinburgh is looking for a geospatial technician/data engineer to support, maintain and develop their award winning Digimap®, Digimap for Schools and other geospatial services and projects.
The individual will join at an exciting time, as EDINA expands their geospatial services with new data products as well as working closely with key industry partners’ data from Ordnance Survey, British Geology Survey, Oceanwise and Getmapping Ltd amongst others.
Ideally you will have a degree in a geospatial science or related discipline, expertise with using a range of GIS applications, database skills and practical experience of handling and processing a range of different geospatial data types and data.
This role reports to the team leader for Geospatial Data in EDINA’s Technical Operations team and offers a salary of £32,982- £38,205 pa, (DOE). EDINA has a hybrid-working pattern, with the successful candidate working on-campus in Edinburgh at least one day per week.
Full-time (35hrs pw) working hours are preferred, flexible working would be considered.

Responsibilities for this role include
- Performing a range of data investigation, preparation, loading and processing tasks. Including determining data loading requirements, creating scripts for loading data into databases both geo-spatial and statistical, undertaking the load. Quality controlling both the process and loaded data. Conduct data processing tasks for new and existing services, including data conversion between different formats and updating service data. (Approx 50% of time)
- Undertaking a range of data management tasks including metadata creation, quality control, assist in writing technical documentation covering data and data processing and quality assurance. (Approx 25% of time)
- Creation of new derived datasets from existing source data, including creating appropriate documentation and quality assurance. (Approx 10% of time)
- Investigate new methods of data delivery and data visualisation. (Approx 10% of time)
- Supporting the work of EDINA by providing GIS skills and knowledge in both desktop and server environments. Production of sample maps and data for presentations and promotion and assisting the Services team in investigating reported data issues from the online services. (Approx 5% of time)

Essential
- Good honours degree in a geo-spatial science (or related subject) or relevant work experience.
- Experience with a range of GIS applications, Spatial database and SQL skills.
- Knowledge of spatial data conversion and practical experience with a range of different data (types and formats).
- Experience with a range of data from United Kingdom data providers
Desirable
- Relevant work experience.
- Knowledge of and experience with ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS and/or Cadcorp SIS GIS software.
- Postgres/PostGIS skills, including PL/SQL and/or PL/PGSQL.
- Knowledge of and experience with data conversion software, for example OGR/GDAL and/or Safe Software’s FME Platform.
- Knowledge of and experience with web map/feature/caching software, for example MapServer and/or Mapproxy.
- Scripting languages such as Python.
- Cartography and data visualization skills.
- Specific experience with data from Ordnance Survey, British Geological Survey, Centre of Ecology and Hydrology, Getmapping, OceanWise or OpenStreeMap.
- Experience in working with different spatial referencing systems and non-UK focused data, such as Open Street Map.
- Familiarity with Linux.
- Knowledge of and experience with image processing or remote sensing.
