Can you help us uncover some of the untold stories of the 300 year history of the Edinburgh Medical School? We are looking for an archival research intern to support the Edinburgh Medical School 300 project.

The role

2026 marks 300 years since the Faculty of Medicine was founded at the University of Edinburgh. Under the guidance of archivists at the University’s Centre for Research Collections, the intern will conduct research aimed to uncover the hidden, untold stories of Edinburgh Medical School’s past and celebrate diversity throughout our history. Their findings will contribute to the ‘300 Faces of Edinburgh Medical School’ campaign, form the ground work for scheduled student archive-athons and help shape communications, activities and events throughout the year.

Employ.ed on Campus is run by the Careers Service in collaboration with University departments and Schools. It offers exclusive semester internships at the University for 2nd year to penultimate year undergraduate students from the University of Edinburgh.

This post is part-time for 15 hours per week, on a flexible basis to be discussed at interview. It is expected that this post will be six months in length and mainly on-campus, working in the Centre for Research Collections, although there will be opportunities to work remotely on agreement with the supervising team.

Your skills and attributes for success

  • A current 2, 3 or penultimate year UG University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for the purposes of student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment)
  • Good research skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions consistently
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office including Excel and Word
  • Good palaeography skills (ability to read old handwriting)
