The role
We are looking for a Research Assistant/Associate in Artificial Intelligence to join our research group to work on a legal AI research, an AHRC funded project led by Prof. Felix Steffek, starting on 1 December 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be based in the Faculty of Law. The project will focus on novel approaches towards explainable and ethical artificial intelligence (AI) in law.
A particular focus will be on predicting decisions of the UK Employment Tribunal (UKET). Our group has already established preliminary approaches to case outcome prediction for the UKET. The relevant papers have been accepted in leading conferences and journals. We are now exploring innovative ways of more detailed prediction and integrating legal arguments into machine learning.
The project aims to advance the frontiers of the ethical use of AI in legal dispute resolution and improve access to justice.
What we're looking for
Candidates should have (or expect to obtain) a Master's degree or are working towards a PhD degree in relevant fields such as Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning and ideally be able to demonstrate a track record of independent research. Applicants with relevant research experience, gained through Master's or PhD study or while working in the relevant industry, are strongly encouraged to apply.
Essential skills include excellent programming (Python), NLP techniques, Machine Learning (in particular probabilistic) and proven communication skills. Candidates must provide the names and contact details of two referees who are familiar with their work in the relevant field whom we can contact for a reference shortly after the interviews.
The funds for this post are on a part-time basis (0.3 FTE) available for 1 year in the first instance. Appointment will be at Research Assistant or at Research Associate level dependent on having a PhD degree. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
