This Net Zero Analyst Intern will report to the Head of Local Net Zero and will work within the DSO directorate based in our London office. You will be a fixed term contract employee (12 - 18 months)

Local Net Zero team

The Local Net Zero team is here to facilitate local authorities' low carbon plans through data, forecasting and collaboration. Across our network, we serve 133 local authorities, and the team designs and gives local authorities data, digital tools, and the support they need to make their Net Zero aspirations a reality.

Local Authorities are beginning to develop their decarbonisation programmes through the creation of "local area energy plans (LAEP)" which outlines a long-term energy plan for their area setting out their planned deployment of low carbon technologies (LCTs) like electric vehicles (EVs), and we will assess these and use these insights to plan where and when to invest on our network so that we are Net Zero ready.

The job

We are offering an amazing opportunity for learning and development within the UK's first ever independent Distribution System Operator (DSO) to help you acquire the skills needed to excel in our industry.

As a Net Zero Analyst Intern you will work on a variety of projects and help develop solutions for industry leading projects to best serve the needs of our customers.

Your role will engage, guide, and supporting Local Authorities and local partners to develop and share their local area energy plans. Your work will help them build well-justified proposals to inform UK Power Networks network investment planning, making a tangible difference towards their decarbonisation journey.

Dimensions

The Net Zero Analyst Intern will work within a team of engineers, analysts, and engagement specialists to deliver UK Power Networks RIIO-ED2 whole system commitment to drive £130m in whole system benefits.

The position is based in our Newington House office near Elephant & Castle underground station in London. Your role will involve visits to other office locations across our areas (e.g., Ipswich or Crawley) and wider locations across London, South East and East of England to support engagement with our customers (including Local Authorities and local partners).

Principal accountabilities

  • Ownership of reviews of Climate Action Plans and Net Zero plans against the LAEP Framework
    • Manage and assure assessments of Local Authority Climate Action Plans/Net Zero Plans against our LAEP framework
    • Help develop LAEP project planning inputs that can be incorporated into our network investment planning, applying the set acceptance criteria, packaging up potential adjustments and gaining management approval
    • Contribute to lessons learnt and ideas for continual improvement of the LAEP Framework
  • Shape, inform and contribute to the Local Net Zero Market Intelligence
    • Monitor, analyse and evaluate main industry changes and LAEP environment, articulate these insights to inform the market intelligence gathering and influence the LAEP strategy, providing recommendations allowing important decisions to be made
    • Contribute to the development and content of the Local Net Zero market intelligence report shared with all partners
    • Support communication and engagement with company partners
    • Support the updates to the dedicated webpage for external partners
  • Engaging and supporting Local Authorities and Local Partners
    • Present outputs from Climate Action Plan and Net Zero plan reviews to important partners
    • Contribute to the development and sharing of the Local Net Zero offering through external engagement
    • Visibly challenge existing approaches, put forward suggestions and ideas for continual improvement to improve customer service
  • Advancement of the Net Zero Trainee Handbook
    • Refreshing and maintaining the Net Zero Trainee Handbook that is updated based on continued lessons within role
  • Support the Local Net Zero team
    • Support the continuous improvement of the Local Net Zero teams project management and governance
    • Support the wider team including Net Zero Associates and Net Zero Project Manager with input to support progression of main projects in the team portfolio
    • Support reporting of progress against project milestones
    • Collaborate with important company partners periodically during ongoing delivery of work to ensure activities are being delivered as intended.

About you

What you'll need

  • You will have achieved or be on target to achieve a minimum of an Honours degree in a numerate discipline or similar
  • You'll have some knowledge of analysing complex datasets, Net Zero and the Power System

What we offer

You will attract a salary of £23,000.00 and a bonus of 7.5%. This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) - 3 days in the office and 2 remote We also provide the following additional benefits:
