We’re the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group, the largest employer of professionals within the nuclear sector with 17,000 colleagues in more than 900 technical and business roles. We are responsible for decommissioning the UK’s earliest nuclear facilities - one of the world’s largest and most important environmental programmes.

We have a 120-year programme and are responsible for 17 nuclear sites across the UK, together with specialist nuclear waste and international transport businesses. And our mission is growing, with more facilities joining us to be decommissioned in the next decade.

Sustainability, safety, and security are at the heart of our long-term mission to prepare our sites for their next use, work which spans into the next century. Join us and play a central role in delivering our mission, tackling some of the most technical complex challenges facing the UK today, helping us leave a safer environment for future generations.

Overview of the programme

Graduates are fundamental to our future. Our programme is unparalleled in supporting talented and ambitious graduates to build a first-class foundation for a rewarding career in the nuclear sector.

Sponsored and hosted by the NDA group, successful candidates will be employed by Energus on a two-year programme (three-years for Finance, Audit, Risk) and, once you have successfully completed your personalised programme, we will help you secure a permanent role within the NDA group.

During your time on the programme, you will be given the unique opportunity to undertake placements across the operating companies that make up NDA group (NDA, Nuclear Restoration Services, Nuclear Transport Solutions, Nuclear Waste Services and Sellafield), learning from leading experts on work that has real impact. You will also participate in a core programme of behavioural development to enhance your skills and professional expertise.

As a Sustainability graduate, you will play a key role in driving the NDA group's Sustainability vision – to be recognised as a leader in transforming nuclear legacies into opportunities for local, regional and national sustainable development. Creating value through nuclear decommissioning - at pace, affordably, with participation and creatively. We have a legal, moral, and ethical responsibility to deliver our work sustainably with care for our people, communities, and the environment, leaving a positive legacy for future generations.

A graduate sustainability advisor would need to be interested in a wide range of competencies and knowledge areas

Appreciation of the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic systems. This involves recognising the complex relationships that lead to prosperity and human wellbeing.

Systems Thinking: problems must be holistically considered in the broader context and long-term consequences. This will help identify leverage points to maximise positive change and mitigate against negative and unintended effects. A good knowledge is required of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Environmental awareness: a strong foundation in environmental factors, such as knowledge in biodiversity and natural capital, climate change mitigation and adaptation, resource management and circular economy.

Socio-economic awareness: knowledge of fundamentals of socio economics, including the levers that can enable prosperous communities at a local, regional and national level. For example, through community engagement, employment opportunities, supply chain management, economic grants etc.

Familiarity with policies and regulation on sustainability and the growing landscape of requirements on sustainability that organisations are working within. And an ability to navigate the legal frameworks and use these to enable more sustainable decision-making processes.

Effective communication and collaboration: graduates will engage with diverse stakeholders, including communities, businesses, workforce and government agencies, building partnerships and fostering dialogue.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship: creativity and innovation drive sustainable solutions. Graduates should be open to new ideas, willing to experiment, and capable of developing innovative projects that contribute to sustainability goals.

Developing a Culture of Sustainability Leadership: knowledge of creating a cultural shift towards sustainability and purpose is desirable. Where sustainability is instinctively understood with a common goal which brings us closer to wellbeing for all.
