At Springtown Industrial Estate in Derry/Londonderry, using some of the most advanced technology in existence, we develop and manufacture the recording heads which write information onto and read information from the recording disc inside a computer’s hard drive. This facility is the largest of its type in the industry, supplying over a million heads every day for Seagate disc drives.
You will be working in the advanced technology development group at Seagate R&D department where we use most recent scientific advances to develop new reading and recording technologies for further extending data storage capacity.
About the role you will
- Perform magnetic thin films characterization using AFM/MFM, XRD/XRR, PPMS VSM, electronic transport and FMR for advanced recording projects.
- Use advanced micromagnetic and atomistic modelling tools to gain insights into the physics of the experimentally investigated effects and define directions for process improvement.
- Work with the design group on developing reading and recording solutions exploiting new experimental and modelling results.
Interns typically work Monday thru Friday 8am to 5pm. The hours are subject to change with or without notice at the sole discretion of Seagate.
About you
- Currently pursuing a Masters in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Available in the first half of 2025 starting in February and returning to university by September.
- Familiar with PVD thin film deposition techniques.
- Experience with FeRh thin magnetic films.
- Familiar with magnetic thin film characterization techniques, including AFM/MFM, SQUID/VSM, electronic transport.
