As a Distribution and Transmission Network Operator, SP Energy Networks keeps the electricity flowing to homes and businesses throughout Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire. The energy landscape is changing fast as the way our customers and communities generate, consume, and interact with energy evolves. Our role is to decarbonise our network through technology and innovation and to support the UK’s journey to Net Zero through electrification. We need to maximise the efficiency of our network to optimise the transmission and distribution of electricity generated from renewables, reducing electricity losses and allowing us to move away from fossil fuels.
With Transmission and Distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation, and consumer behaviour.
As a Civil Engineer, you will be exposed to a wide range of civil assets, including structures, drainage, foundations, buildings, bridges, and tunnels of varying ages and conditions. This will provide you with valuable experience in all stages of asset management and construction cycles, allowing you to build a successful career within the various areas of the SP Energy Networks business.
You’ll find more information about SP Energy Networks, including details of our current projects, on our website.
What you’ll be doing
You will have a wide range of responsibilities and tasks that will allow you to gain valuable experience in various aspects of civil engineering. You’ll get involved in Civil Engineering activities including Asset Management, Project Development, Engineering Standards, Transmission / 132kV Civil Detailed Design, Construction Management, and Project Delivery across both the Distribution and Transmission businesses.
During your placements, you could expect to be doing the following
- Civil Surveying: You may be involved in managing surveys and assessments of civil assets, such as structures, drainage systems, foundations, buildings, bridges, and tunnels. This will involve collecting data, analysing measurements, and evaluating the condition and performance of these assets.
- Conceptual Design: You may contribute to the early stages of project development by assisting in the evolution of conceptual designs for infrastructure projects. This will involve considering factors such as functionality, feasibility, and sustainability and collaborating with architects, designers, and other professionals to develop innovative and practical solutions.
- Detailed Civil and Structural Design: You will play a crucial role in the detailed design phase of projects where you will use your technical knowledge and skills to create precise and accurate designs for civil and structural elements. This includes creating drawings, specifying materials, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and regulations.
- Civil Drawing: You will be responsible for creating and maintaining detailed drawings and plans for civil engineering projects. This includes using computer-aided design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software to produce accurate and comprehensive drawings that can be used for construction and documentation purposes.
- Civil Policy and Investment Strategy: You may contribute to the development of civil policies and investment strategies within the SP Energy Networks business. This involves analysing data, evaluating industry trends, and working with stakeholders to develop strategies that optimise asset management, construction, and maintenance processes.
- Site Engineering Duties: You may have the opportunity to work on-site, overseeing construction projects and ensuring that designs are implemented accurately and safely. This may involve coordinating with contractors, conducting inspections, and resolving any technical issues that arise during the construction process.
- Project Management: You may be involved in project management tasks, such as coordinating resources, managing budgets, and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within scope. This requires effective communication, organisation, and co-ordination skills to ensure successful project outcomes.
Throughout your program, you will gain exposure to a wide range of network investment projects, spanning from low voltage (LV) to extra high voltage (EHV) across Distribution, Transmission, and central core business functions. This will give you a comprehensive understanding of civil engineering in the energy sector and allow you to contribute to the development of critical infrastructure projects.
