This role will be desk-based research, examining plant species with a use working with existing Kew databases (e.g. World Checklist of Useful Plants) in addition to new data and information collected through a literature review. This will involve the documentation of the diversity of plant species used by humans across the world, as well as more detailed assessments of the sustainability of the use of these species. Records obtained will then be synced to the Species Use Database, with support from partners from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The aim is to provide evidence of plant use which could be used to develop policy strategies, and inform actions towards the preservation of plant diversity and its contributions to people (e.g. medicine, food, energy).
About the role
We are looking for an undergraduate on three or four year courses or recent graduates (within two years of graduating) seeking a short period of work experience in a relevant research field (e.g., environmental sciences, ecology, evolution, data science). You will be proficient in word processing, spreadsheets and database software with experience of literature reviews and scientific writing.
It would be beneficial to have experience working in a group or project work and being accustomed to a diverse workload and working with a range of people. It would also be beneficial to have programming skills.
