Job purpose & context

The role is a key part of the P2i R&D team and will provide technical support to R&D projects as required, particularly around sample preparation, processing operation and analysis of functional nano-coatings. The successful candidate will work alongside a team of Technicians who conduct and perform scientific experiments and monitor, record and report on their findings.

Main responsibilities

The main aspects of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • To assist with research and development projects as required
  • To conduct scientific experiments and perform tests in the laboratory.
  • To monitor, record and report work through lab notebooks on a continuous basis as well as via written reports and verbal communication/ presentations.
  • To ensure work progresses according to plan and inform supervisor if problems arise
  • To maintain a clean, safe and efficient working environment in the laboratory
  • To participate in team discussions

Key relationships and interfaces

This role will interact mainly with the R&D and Engineering teams as well other Innovation teams, Applications, plus our Technical Sales Support team and Facilities.

Skills & experience

Essential

  • Physical Sciences/Material Science/Chemistry degree

Other requirements

  • Degree level knowledge of chemistry and/or physics, and/or material science (physical sciences preferred).
  • Ability to work as part of project team & build relationships with colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to work under pressure to achieve goals to agreed timing.
  • Experienced in laboratory work including handling chemicals, and able to work safely with minimal supervision.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel and Word).
  • Motivated to deliver practical results & flexible to changing requirements.
  • Professional and positive outlook to all tasks and requests from line and project manager.
  • Good planning and organisation skills - ability to balance multiple tasks and prioritise critical tasks.
  • Demonstrate a good eye for detail and use of initiative.
  • Have a good work ethic and contribute ideas to technical discussions and debates.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience in product, process and/or R&D development
  • Experience in Standard Operating Procedure writing
  • Workshop experience
