The Industrial Placement Electrical Engineer role provides students with a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in electrical engineering within the utility engineering sector. This 12-month placement offers a diverse range of work experiences and supported on-the-job learning with guidance from mentors, coaches, and line managers. Flexibility will be key to gaining exposure across the organisation's national business locations and departments.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Design and Engineering Support: Assist in cable sizing calculations and producing cable route drawings, single-line diagrams, and multicore block wiring diagrams. Specify electrical switchgear, transformers, LV and HV switchgear/fusegear, and battery chargers. Undertake the design of LV and HV networks using specialised software. Provide support to the civil design team regarding electrical aspects of the design.
  • Supplier and Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with equipment suppliers to ensure project requirements are met. Work with DNOs (Distribution Network Operators) to gather necessary information and ensure designs meet their specifications. Review manufacturer drawings to ensure compliance with the project's design.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Produce engineering and design reports for project deliverables. Contribute to the preparation of financial control and reporting documentation for assigned projects.
  • Programme and Delivery Management: Efficiently manage and programme assigned tasks to ensure timely completion. Assist in project delivery by ensuring designs meet technical, quality, and financial expectations.

Skills and experience

  • Currently studying for a master’s or bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with a minimum grade expectation of 2:2.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to apply technical expertise effectively.
  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate and address challenges proactively.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and specialised calculation or simulation software.
  • Strong report writing and communication skills.
  • A valid UK driving license.
