Our Operations Management Graduate Scheme explores the full spectrum of operational railway activities. Your training and learning experiences will cover all areas of operations including stations, signalling, control, incident response, electrical control, planning and freight. You will gain valuable first-hand knowledge of how the railway is run as a business.
Overview
- Your starting salary is £26,500 (including regional allowances where relevant) plus a £2,000 welcome bonus.
- The scheme lasts for 18 months.
- There are opportunities available in: Bedford, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Perth, Rugby, Swindon, and York.

Resourceful and hardworking, you’ll be good at managing your time and be able to motivate yourself to get the job done. With an interest in business and in particular how we operate, you’ll be curious about how we work with train operating providers, freight users and passengers.
We want you to be a future leader. So, we’ll also look for leadership skills, drive, ambition and plenty of determination. A skilled communicator too, you’ll be happy engaging with people at all levels and building relationships with colleagues, suppliers, and customers alike. You’ll also need a degree of flexibility and not mind occasionally travelling to attend training opportunities at various locations.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll experience key customer and supplier relationships. You’ll explore our connections with train and freight operating companies. And you’ll learn about the challenges we all face as we work together to deliver the very best customer experience.
Your learning experiences will include job shadowing, visits, attending meetings, spending time with your mentor and getting involved in real work, like interviewing, data analysis, planning and project management.
Placements will be a period of supervised work where you’ll have the opportunity to experience working in a specific role or performing a particular assignment. You’ll normally be on a placement for at least four weeks.
What you’ll get out of it
The scheme is focused on giving you a solid platform of knowledge to build on. You’ll enjoy a mix of formal training, learning experiences and placements.
As part of the scheme you will also study:
- Level 4 Apprenticeship in Passenger Transport Operations Management
- Certificate in Higher Education in Railway Operations Management
- CMI Level 5 – Delivered by the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators, which you will be a member of.
- You will also attend signaller training over the course of the scheme.
