NATS is the UK’s leading Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP). Every year we handle 2.6 million flights and keep 250 million passengers safe whilst in UK airspace. We provide air traffic management (ATM) services to 15 airports in the UK as well as providing these services around the world spanning Europe, Middle East, Asia, and North America.

We’re shaping the future of ATM through our focus on ‘advancing aviation and keeping the skies safe’ and believe that the size and diversity of our business makes us an exciting choice for undergraduates considering their future careers.

Safety is at the heart of what we do and who we are – every one of us has a part to play in ensuring operational, physical, cyber, and personal safety every day.
The Safety Management & Oversight team is split into four areas of speciality: Safety Management System (SMS), Safety Oversight, Safety Performance and Regulatory Compliance. These sub-departments all interact to provide a detailed safety picture for the business and the NATS board.

What will the Industrial Placement (IP) Scheme involve?

This is a one-year scheme available to undergraduate students who are keen to gain industry insight during their penultimate year of university. This IP scheme will be based at our Head Office in Whiteley, near Fareham in Hampshire. However we have adopted ‘agile working’ which will enable you, where possible, to have the opportunity and flexibility to work in our modern office facilities as well as at home.

Working in Safety Management & Oversight provides a fantastic career opportunity to develop safety related skills while working in a multi-disciplinary environment. It will provide the opportunity to be part of a team focussed on the development and delivery of a safe service to our ATC colleagues, Airline and Military Customers, and to the travelling public.

Within the SM&O team, you will have the opportunity to work with the teams that deliver:

  • NATS Safety Management System, ensuring it meets the needs of the business, remains compliant with the ever-changing regulatory framework and delivers continual improvement. The SMS is being continually developed to include any new systems, processes and operations. This includes unmanned aircraft and new concepts to the industry.
  • Safety Oversight, ensuring the necessary systems and actions are in place across NATS for us to provide independent safety oversight through the analysis and provision of safety performance data.
  • Safety Performance, providing safety & quality performance and improvement data & analysis, across NATS.
  • Regulatory Compliance, working across NATS to ensure compliance with DfT legislative and CAA regulatory requirements.
  • They manage the Common Requirement Matrices which is one of the essential foundations of our certification as an air navigation services provider

Overall, as an IP in SM&O, you will form part of the team working to reduce the risk of safety accidents and incidents in civil aviation with a view to ensure public confidence in aviation transport. You will learn about the NATS safety management system with a focus on safety performance reporting, regulatory compliance as well our internal safety oversight.

Typically, you will be involved in

  • Development of the NATS Safety Management System
  • Working in multidisciplinary project teams to identify and manage hazards and risks.
  • Production and analysis of safety performance reports
  • Monitoring of compliance against legislation and regulation
  • Supporting oversight activities carried out by NATS business areas.

Our current team comes from a wide range of backgrounds which provides us with diversity and a range of skills to leverage. We welcome applications from many disciplines, not just safety or technical related qualifications, who can demonstrate an interest in the technical and non-technical elements of safety management & oversight.
