Work schedule
With Headquarters in the US and a global reach, Moog Inc. is a world-leading integrator of precision motion control systems for aerospace, defence, industrial and medical applications.
Over the last 65+ years, our engineers have developed the capability to design and manufacture the most advanced products for application where precise control of velocity, force, acceleration, and fluid flow are critical. Moog Inc. is split across four operating groups: Military Aircraft Group, Commercial Aircraft Group Industrial Group, & Space and Defence Group.
We are proud that our people and products represent a culture where the opportunity to solve a challenging control problem is always welcomed. This Internship is available at our Wolverhampton facility within our Aircraft Group, which focuses on the design, test, and manufacture of our high-spec primary and secondary flight control actuation products which are used on both Commercial and Military aircraft.
We strive to foster a close relationship with our Interns from day one so that they can return to the business where possible as a member of our Graduate Engineering Programme.
We are currently recruiting for a number of Engineering Industrial Placements within the following areas of our business in Wolverhampton.
Military Actuation Engineering
The Military Actuation Engineering team is part of the Engineering function within Moog Aircraft Group and is responsible for the product development of hydraulic primary flight control actuators, predominantly for military and rotor-bladed aircraft. This team is responsible for the full development cycle from concept design through to introduction into service and support of legacy products.
You will be embedded within one part of the Military Actuation Engineering team (design, analysis, or test) where you will gain hands-on experience contributing to real projects while working alongside experienced Engineers.
The range of activities that you will be involved with is quite broad and will be tailored to suit your strengths. Typically, you will get the experience of performance analysis, simulation, report writing, component or test fixture design, and test activities.
You will gain exposure to all aspects of the product development cycle: concept development, project planning, requirements management, design reviews, testing and certification, and support of legacy products.
You will get to experience interactions with both customers and suppliers and see how our equipment forms part of overall aircraft systems. You will also have exposure to the industry standards, processes, and tools that we apply when developing our products.
Commercial Actuation Engineering
The Commercial Actuation Engineering team is part of the Engineering function within Moog Aircraft Group and is responsible for the design and development of secondary flight control actuators, predominantly for the actuation of the high lift systems on large Commercial aircraft. This team is responsible for the full development cycle from concept design to introduction into service and support of legacy products.
You will work on legacy and sustaining projects where you will gain hands-on experience contributing to real projects involving aircraft currently in service working alongside experienced Engineers.
You will gain exposure to many aspects of the product development cycle including project planning, requirements management, design review, testing, and certification. You will take part in project reviews involving suppliers and customers and will generate documents in support of these reviews.
You will have exposure to and learn to assess engineering drawings and technical documents and will generate technical specifications and reports that you will release in accordance with company standards. You will be involved with in-house test activities on flight control actuators that can include testing, data validation, and test report compilation and release.
Product Engineering
Product Engineering provides technical support to our assembly and test operational areas of the business in both the Original Equipment (OE) and Global Sustainment (GS) departments, covering commercial and military sectors.
This support ranges from new product introduction to legacy support for in-service hardware. The duties of a Product Engineer are broad, and they interact with a wide range of other engineering disciplines and departments within the business.
Typical activities include leading and implementing process improvement activities, designing, improving, and organizing the repair of tooling. Reviewing test equipment is also part of the role.
The placement will be split across OE and GS, in both commercial and military sectors, providing you with the opportunity to effect change throughout the product life cycle.
During your time at Moog, you will have the opportunity to gain first-hand product experience by interacting directly with technicians while carrying out a range of tasks. You will be involved with the Product Engineering APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) interactions. Product Engineers are self-motivated and enthusiastic problem solvers whose role has a direct influence on the turn-around time, quality, and cost of the product.
Assembly Systems Engineering
The Assembly Systems Engineering (ASE) function supports the execution of manufacturing technologies for the development of advanced assembly processes including automation, integrated inspection, measurements, and data analysis. The ASE function has a global responsibility to research, develop, and implement applicable technologies for application in production operations across Aircraft Group (AG).
The ASE Intern will report to the Lead ASE on the Wolverhampton AG site, typically running 3–6-month projects with the objective of implementing assembly technology solutions in support of quality and productivity improvements in production operations. Projects will involve research, hands-on development, and integration of cutting-edge technologies to solve complex assembly process challenges. Project development will be based on-site but implementations will be considered for all AG sites, UK, USA, and Philippine facilities.
The ASE Intern will be provided with the opportunity and support to learn new skills and further their knowledge in a wide range of areas. Typical projects may include process/tooling design and 3D modeling, programming in C#/Python, database design and transactions in SQL Server, PLC programming, system build and integration using pneumatics and electronic controls, as well as exposure to a variety of technologies such as robotics, vision systems with artificial intelligence, force-monitoring presses, automated torque tools and more.
Quality Engineering
The Quality function supports all parts of the Wolverhampton Organisation in regard to Product Integrity, Safety, and Product Stability. This ensures our equipment is fit for purpose and the Customer's safety and operational use are never compromised. This important function carries with it significant responsibility.
Reporting to the Process Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for running projects of 3-6 months in duration with the objective of implementing solutions in support of quality and productivity improvements in production operations.
This internship will give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, working in a dynamic Aerospace Production environment helping to resolve challenging issues affecting the Quality of our products.
You will be able to develop your communication skills through interaction with all parts of the organisation at every level, from the Site Lead to Machine Operators. You will receive training for the APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) Tool and gain exposure to the wider business whilst you work alongside colleagues within Product Engineering, Operations, and Engineering.
Test Systems Engineering
The Test Systems team is responsible for many diverse engineering-related activities, including the development of application-specific electronic & hydromechanical test system solutions, from concept to detailed design. These Test Systems support the Qualification and Production Acceptance testing of a wide range of Moog Aircraft Electro-Hydraulic Actuation products and other related Flight Control Systems.
The team also manages and deploys their own projects, from initial proposal through requirements management and deployment of bespoke test equipment system solutions in complete fulfillment of customer needs, whether internal or external.
Reporting to the Test Systems Design Manager, you will be responsible for assisting/supporting with multiple disciplines of Test Systems Design (designing new test equipment), Project management, and deployment.
This internship will give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with Test Systems ranging from 50 years old right through to state-of-the-art new technology. Test equipment gives you the unique opportunity to be involved in products from concept right through to the end of product life
