Our industrial placements are 13 months long and during your time with us, we’ll make you an integral part of our team and give you a real job – with real responsibilities – from day one. We hope to help you expand your horizons and encourage your personal and professional development.

Life in Research and Development (R&D)

During the placement you will be expected to plan and execute tests of various scale (e.g., benchtop and pilot plant) and be responsible and accountable for your project, as well as to coordinate any informal sensory assessment if required.

Reading Science Centre (RSC)

The RSC is the home of the Mondelez Global Science Centre and wholly owned subsidiary, Reading Scientific Services Limited (RSSL).  This role will be based within the RSC as part of the Mondelez Ingredient Research team.

Ingredient research

The Ingredient Research (IR) group are a global team dedicated to establishing fundamental scientific understanding and discovering technologies that will enable breakthrough competitive and sustainable advantage for our categories and overall Mondelez business. Optimising the way we deliver ingredients, flavour, texture, and well-being credentials is a critical aspect to delighting and bringing joy to our consumers and ensuring the growth of our company.

Each year we welcome interns into both our Flavour and Materials Science teams, to work with our technical experts to develop technologies that enable innovation across Mondelez’s portfolio of snack products.  Part of your role will be to prepare lab scale samples for sensory and analytical assessment.

In the Flavour team, you will work with experts in flavour chemistry to develop your own understanding of flavour science, analysis and perception, using prototypes and model systems to demonstrate the impact of different ingredients and flavour combinations on the flavour profile of a product. 

In the Materials Science team, you will apply your knowledge of physics and chemistry to help develop technologies to improve the sustainability and nutritional profile of our products, in line with our well-being strategy.

In both teams you will produce technical reports/presentations and periodically communicate your key findings to stakeholders. You will also have the opportunity to interact with the wider R&D Community, other business functions and external suppliers. In addition to this you may also be expected to support other ongoing project activities in and outside of your immediate team. For some roles, occasional travel within the UK, or international, may be required.

To excel in our Ingredient Research roles, we are looking for someone studying towards one of the following degrees - Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Food Technology, Materials Science, Physical Sciences or Physics.

Candidate requirements

  • Studying towards a suitable scientific degree (detailed above)
  • Predicted classification 2:1 (or equivalent)
  • Self-motivated and driven
  • Naturally inquisitive and passionate about technical excellence
  • Can work with a level of autonomy, as well as within a team
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, communication and presentation abilities
  • Pro-active and ready to take on new responsibilities
  • Able to build strong relationships
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office
  • Able to travel (if required)

Starting salary: £23,000

We will be holding our final stage assessment centre for this role in-person at our Reading offices on Wednesday 4th December 2024. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered.
