Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is a global leader in the large-scale deployment of post-combustion carbon capture technology. MHI’s KMCDR Process™ is operating successfully at plants around the world and is the selected technology on multiple projects currently under development. Our business is growing rapidly and is applicable to industries from cement and steel to energy-from-waste and BECCS.

Successful candidates will join the Decarbonisation Team based in Chiswick, West London, supporting the development of projects across the EMEA region. We are looking for a keen graduate who is capable of working flexibly in a busy team to support day-to-day activities as well as core projects. Over the period of the internship, you will be expected to work in a variety of roles including:

  • Engineering: responding to technical enquiries and running studies to give preliminary plant criteria depending on industry.
  • Project Management: project tracking and reporting, building cost estimates and planning/scheduling.
  • Business Development: Research potential projects, customers, and competitors. Develop responses to customer enquiries, tenders.

The overall aim is to support the team in securing new business and executing projects.

General duties

  • Support the Decarbonisation Business Team in whatever role is assigned.
  • Respond to internal and external requests, using technical knowledge and analytical skills while adhering to sound engineering principles, and asking for internal support.
  • Participate in technical discussions and meetings with customers and partners.
  • Review technical and business documents, prepare executive summaries for the team.
  • Assist in the preparation and/or reviewing of internal and external reports (weekly, monthly, final)
  • Escalate issues/problems as required acting as the liaison between different teams.
  • Day to day communications and liaison with customers, partners, technical and business/commercial team of EMEA, and other relevant departments at MHI’s HQ in Japan to engage proactively on technical issues.

Required skills

  • Ability to grasp and willingness to learn technical concepts.
  • Strong numerical skills capable of application to Engineering or Business
  • Excellent communication skills, clear precise writing and ability to speak publicly.
  • Strong research and analysis skills with the ability to simplify complicated concepts
  • Motivation to proactively manage workload and decision making.
  • Proficient with Microsoft tools eg Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc
  • Fluent in English with some knowledge of Japanese or European language and advantage.

Useful skills

  • Understanding of carbon capture, chemical process, and thermodynamics.
  • Understanding of the main project phases eg Feasibility Study, Pre-FEED, FEED
  • Understanding of Project Management
  • Experience / interest in Net Zero solutions and the wide carbon value chain
  • Capability with Excel Macros and other programing tools eg Python.

Education

Strong degree in Chemical Engineering or other engineering is required.

Working hours

  • Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week
  • Interns should expect to come into the office up to 5 days a week, however, where possible they will be allowed some flexibility to match the team they are working with.
