The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) employs approximately 44,000 officers and Staff, plus thousands of volunteers and provides policing to one of the most diverse capital cities in the world. The service provides policing to the 32 London Boroughs as well as a number of other local, national and international functions such as counter terrorism and organised crime prevention. As the country’s largest police service, the service is recognised internationally as a leader in fighting crime and many other policing organisations look to the MPS for best practice and guidance.

We are looking to recruit students for a 52 week student placement with the Metropolitan Police Service. All roles will give students valuable insight and experience of working for one of the largest public organisations in the UK and the largest single employer in London. Counter Terrorism Policing

Counter Terrorism Policing is a collaboration of UK police forces working with the UK intelligence community to help protect the public and our national security by preventing, deterring and investigating terrorist activity. As the threat of terrorism continues to change and evolve, we need to be ready which means we need to be constantly adapting. The role

Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) relies on a wide range of technologies. As an Associate End User Computing Engineer, you will support the desktop, voice and video estate that underpin Counter Terrorism Policing operations to keep the country safe.

This role is aligned to the Associate End User Computing Engineer role set out within the Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework (DDAT).

You will join a team of End User Computing Engineers, located east of Birmingham, with easy access from the M6 and M42 or from the Counter Terrorism Operations Centre based in West London. This is a fantastic opportunity to assist in maintaining a world class desktop estate function within Counter Terrorism Policing.

The End User Computing Team ensures that all the computers, telephony and video conferencing systems are available, operational, and secure through support tools and best practices.

The team is responsible for installing new equipment on site, removing old equipment, troubleshooting faults at site, and updating desktop operating system images.

An Associate End User Computing Engineer works within End User Computing team using a ticket management system to manage service requests, incidents, and changes across the estate.

At this role level, you will

  • Work with a ticketing system to action service requests, incidents, and changes to the desktop estate.
  • Adhere to best practices for desktop and telephony technologies.
  • Work within a service management tool working through ticket workloads to SLA (Service Level Agreement) priority.
  • Be expected to continue your learning pathway within role with a mixture of internal and external training courses.
  • You will work on a variety of platforms and tools so having the ability to quickly learn technical skills are key to your success.

The ideal candidate will be

  • Working towards an appropriate technology-based degree or equivalent.
  • Show a passion for technology and want to start a career withing CTP.
  • The End User Computing Team is a key component of Counter Terrorism Police’s IT strategy which operational activities depend on.

Key tasks

As an Associate End User Computing Engineer, you will:

  • Help manage the effective operation of the End User Computing Team by
  • Ensure personal workload is effectively managed, prioritised and issues are escalated to line management, as necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to required polices, standards, controls, and best practice.
  • Utilise technical documentation to ensure all services are maintained and knowledge is learned.

Experience

The role requires an aptitude for technology and working towards an appropriate technology-based degree or equivalent. The role holder should demonstrate:

  • An aptitude for technology and a desire to continue to learn and develop.
  • An understanding or experience of desktop computing.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to simply communicate verbally or in writing to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Vetting

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Developed Vetting (DV) level before taking up the post.

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) OR Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.
