About the roles

As a Composite Manufacturing Engineering IP, you will find yourself creating the manufacturing methods for some of the most complex carbon fibre structures such as the chassis, suspension, wings and engine components. Utilising CATIA 3D Experience you will turn designed parts and drawings into the individual plies our highly skilled laminators require to build these components. Implementing our detailed training programme to produce laser projections for accurate ply placement and designing tooling to improve part quality. You will take an active role in root cause investigations to ensure we are able to get parts to the track in the quickest possible time and at the lowest cost without compromising quality or performance. Applying the knowledge acquired within your degree to help us develop new technologies faster than anyone else on the grid.

We are a small department with a lot of ambition and as a placement student you will quickly enjoy the same freedom and responsibilities as a full-time employee; actively contributing to and, in time, leading your own components. You will be coached and supported by a team of experienced engineers, ensuring you learn our processes and methodologies as quickly as possible helping you to grow as an engineer along the way.

As a Composite Machining IP, you will work collaboratively as part of a small group, you will apply your thoughtful and inquisitive nature to exciting projects that improve our planning and manufacturing processes, enhance our tools and methodologies, or solve problems with our car manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to be involved in the process development for cutting edge manufacturing technology

As a placement student with us you will enjoy the same responsibilities and creative freedoms as our full-time employees and will make a very real contribution to the performance of our Team. Your duties will include development of processes in manufacture such as planning of machine workload, digitised check sheet processes and the introduction of new technologies.

Supported and mentored by experienced engineers, you will see your skills develop over your time with us. You will return to university to complete your studies having enjoyed an experience that helped you grow as an engineer.

  • You have a passion for process engineering and manufacturing and are excited about the opportunity to develop your skills by applying your curious nature to stimulating projects.

  • A sound understanding of the engineering principals that provide the foundations for a manufacturing engineer.
  • An open and honest communication style, you relish collaborating in a team setting and enjoy discussing technical concepts.
  • Equally comfortable working on your own, applying your reflective nature, interpretive skills, attention to detail and dependable judgment to understand complicated engineering problems then propose and evaluate viable solutions in a timely fashion.

A prior interest in motorsport is not required; we are more interested in your potential to apply your academic skills and understanding to practical manufacturing challenges. Whatever your background, we believe that you will find your time with us a memorable and enriching experience.

Skills you could gain from your placement include

  • A deep understanding of the composite manufacturing process, its advantages, limitations, and future potential.
  • Learning the tools required to improved quality, lead time and cost within a production line.
  • Become a skilled CAD user in CATIA 3D Experience. Creating surfaces, parts and learning the composites modules.
  • Interpretation and understanding of technical drawings, specifications, and product control documentation.
  • Hands on experience in working with composite manufacture.
  • An understanding of how all areas of an F1 car are manufactured and the strategies employed to overcome the hurdles presented by parts designed for performance and not manufacture.
  • Project and time management techniques to maximise your own efficiency.
  • Creating innovative solutions to problems.
  • Interpreting data to help improve manufacturing techniques.
  • Developing tools and methodologies to improve manufacturing and planning processes.
  • Planning and performing test programmes on 5 axis CNC machines.
