Lumentum has an opportunity for a Laser Laboratory Engineer to join our Chip R&D team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to test and perform experimental characterisation and performance investigation of advanced photonic integrated circuits and devices, specifically semiconductor laser, modulator, and receiver devices, to enable the rapid and successful completion of chip NPI programmes. The role is based at our Northamptonshire offices.

Job role

The Laser Laboratory Engineer will be developing world-leading optical components for use in ultra-high data rate systems for cloud data centre, 5G mobile and coherent telecommunications optical fibre networks. You will need to work closely with other members of the laser, modulator and receiver design teams, as well as with members of the wider chip R&D community, the product engineering, test, reliability and process architect teams. You must be proactive and be able to work independently and under general supervision.

Key responsibilities

  • Optical experimental characterisation of new and improved photonic devices and photonic integrated circuits (PICs), for coherent detection and direct detection systems above 100 Gb/s.
  • Development of experimental hardware/software for testing photonic III-V semiconductor devices involving a broad range of disciplines – optical/electrical/RF
  • Experimental characterisation of state of the art photonic III-V semiconductor devices, performance investigation; developing new experimental techniques, statistical data analysis; failure mode investigation

Skills and experience

Qualifications

  • Background in physics, electronic, electrical engineering or a related discipline (essential)

Knowledge/skills

  • Specific experience of device/component testing for new product introduction, setting up test hardware/software, data acquisition
  • Ability to use scientific and engineering reasoning in a wide range of situations including statistical data analysis
  • Specialized knowledge and skills in relevant areas (e.g. semiconductor device physics, testing, electronic design, software development, statistical analysis). (desirable)

Experience

  • Position is suitable for candidates who have recently graduated and/or with up to 5 years post-graduate experience
