To assist in the vital work of restoring and conserving our historic collection.

This role will include an in house training programme to build and develop your skills to start your career in Conservation. Training will include learning how to safely use equipment, how to carry out conservation treatments and techniques, as well as learning to research historic objects to conserve them appropriately and in a historically accurate manner.

What you will do

You will be expected to work independently as well as across different teams in order to contribute to and deliver the priorities of IWM - using your knowledge, skills, talent and potential to the best of your ability.

You will focus at all times on delivering excellent customer service, ensure value for money at all times while being professional, courteous and demonstrating the behaviours and attributes expected of all IWM employees. You will also adhere to all corporate standards, and use corporate systems as directed to ensure consistency of service, brand and operational standards.

You will undertake day to day activities to the best of your ability and to the required standards; and strive to learn and develop your skills and knowledge. You will be expected to comply with corporate standards, and use corporate systems, processes and procedures– and undertake any necessary training as directed. Your duties will include the below.

Conservation

  • Carrying out conservation and restoration work on exhibits as directed
  • Assisting the Conservator with the planning and day to day running of projects as required
  • Accurately recording all work carried out on projects
  • Advising the Conservator of any anticipated problems which might prevent the completion of tasks
  • You will undertake day to day activities to the best of your ability and to the required standards; and strive to learn and develop your skills and knowledge.

Training

  • Attending any training organised by IWM and undertake all training to the best of your abilities.
  • To identify and implement learning and development needs for yourself

Safe working

  • Work in such a manner as to ensure your own safety and the safety of others including members of the public and report to your manager any hazards, dangerous occurrences, or dangerous equipment you see, and any accident you are involved in or are witness to.
  • Ensuring that Health and Safety requirements of any task carried out are complied with
  • The pre-use inspection of any ground equipment, and its return to the appropriate storage area immediately after use
  • Carrying out other duties as required ensuring the overall smooth running of the museum.
  • You will be expected to comply with corporate standards, and use corporate systems, processes and procedures– and undertake any necessary training as directed.
  • Work in such a manner as to ensure your own safety and the safety of others including members of the public and report to your manager any hazards, dangerous occurrences or dangerous equipment you see, and any accident you are involved in or are witness to.
