First Actuarial has been around since 2004, when a small group of like-minded actuaries came together to bring fresh thinking to pensions consultancy. Two decades later, we’re heading for 20% revenue growth this year, employing around 500 people across six locations.

We’re still an independent business with no chargeable hours targets, giving our people the time to deliver their best work and excel. We shape our high-quality services by listening closely to our clients’ needs. And we price those services fairly.

As we develop our business, prospects for our people grow. Our Basingstoke, Leeds, Manchester, Peterborough, London and Tonbridge offices provide supportive work environments where everyone can make a difference. We enjoy work and celebrate our successes. And we provide support and helpful feedback, so we all learn and improve.

We love numbers, but we love people more. Staff wellbeing and work-life balance have always been core values. Beyond the firm, we’re known for our integrity. We’re happy to challenge conventional thinking and speak up.

Internship Programme

We run an 8-week paid summer internship programme that offers great training and work experience allowing you to get an in-depth understanding of the role of a future Investment Consultant. You will learn how our firm operates and get to meet colleagues from across the firm, including our Partners. You will have a dedicated learning buddy to support your internship.

Investment Internship Opportunities 2025

For 2025, we have investment Internship openings in our Basingstoke, Leeds, and Tonbridge offices.

What do investment consultants do?

Investment consultants use numeracy skills and financial market knowledge to help clients with their investment decisions; designing suitable investment portfolios that balance returns with the risks that individual clients can afford to run. As the majority of our clients are pension scheme trustees, the service we offer and advice we give takes into account the need to balance the investment strategy with the pension scheme liabilities.

What will I be doing on a day-to-day basis?

Although it sounds like a cliché, no two days will be the same. As an investment intern, you’ll be working with a range of clients. Initially, you’ll be involved in our excellent investment research and performance reporting as well as producing bespoke client advice and carrying out investment modelling. You’ll learn about managing client relationships, attending client meetings and get to grips with how we present and discuss our advice firsthand.

Testimonials

“My time as a summer intern at First Actuarial has been extremely transformative and enjoyable. Being immersed in a relaxed but professional environment which prioritises personal development, learning and collaborating, has been the perfect introduction to the industry. I have been able to work closely with people at all stages of their careers, contribute to meaningful projects and communicate directly with both trustees and fund managers.

First Actuarial's culture has given me the freedom to be inquisitive, propose ideas and learn constructively. This internship has solidified and grown my passion for investments, as well as equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to pursue this career. If you’re looking for an internship where you will gain technical experience, the importance of teamwork and critical thinking skills, I couldn’t recommend this role more. I could not speak more highly of the people I have worked with or the company itself.”

Rebecca Harris – Investment Team Summer Intern 2024

“I've had an amazing summer with the Investment Team at First Actuarial. Having completed several internships before, what truly sets this experience apart is the clear value and impact of your work across various sub-teams. You're given substantial responsibilities and a wide array of tasks, all while being part of a collaborative environment where nobody is too busy to help. There are numerous training sessions and opportunities to participate in meetings, both of which greatly support your learning. I'd strongly recommend applying if this is an industry that you're interested in!”
