CNH is looking to recruit a placement student to work in the Tractor Product Development team at the Basildon location, for a 12-month placement starting in August 2025.

Mechanical Design and Validation Engineer – Tractor Product Development

This 12-month industrial placement position represents an opportunity for you to be immersed in the Product Development process and design of state-of-the-art small and medium tractors at CNH’s global centre of excellence in alternative fuels.

You will be working as a Mechanical Design and Validation Engineer in a team of experienced design and testing engineers who are responsible for the development of New Holland mid powered tractor products, covering T6 and T7 models. You will also gain exposure to other areas of a global engineering team including Product Validation, Purchasing, Program Management, Vehicle Architecture, Product Cost and Manufacturing.

You will be responsible for the design of parts and systems for new and current production tractor products, developing idea’s through from concept to realisation of designs in CAD, protype part build and testing and finally into production. Our site in Basildon provides a unique opportunity to experience design, product validation, prototype vehicle builds and a full production vehicle assembly line all in one facility.

Job role

  • Design of parts and systems for tractor projects considering technical solutions that bring the best trade-off between performance, cost, quality, timing, and reliability.
  • Release of CAD models and drawings for prototype part procurement and production
  • Preparing and presenting design reviews to cross functional teams to gain approval of designs prior to release.
  • Provide technical assistance for the preparation of vehicles for testing and later in the project phase to manufacturing plants for optimization of manufacturing processes.
  • Plan and manage physical and virtual validation activities to have robust designs prior to release (CFD, FEA, Rig testing and full vehicle tests)
  • Preparing technical documentation for cost evaluation / investments to support decision-making processes.
  • Working and managing activities across a global cross functional team

Job requirements and qualifications

  • 2 years into a degree in a Mechanical Engineering or similar subject
  • Experience in 3D CAD software such as Creo, Catia, Solidworks
  • Experience in virtual validation tools e.g. FEA and CFD
  • Fully Competent in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Word & Outlook
  • Proactive approach and able to work under own initiative.
  • Good teamwork, communication, and presentation skills
  • Enthusiastic, can-do attitude with willingness to learn and “get out of your comfort zone”.

Role is 37.5 hours per week with an early finish on Friday.
