Formerly known as FG Wilson, Caterpillar Northern Ireland was acquired by Caterpillar in 1999 and is an integral part of the Caterpillar enterprise. The company has two sites in Northern Ireland. The facility located in Larne is home to the Electric Power business where the team designs and manufactures Cat® Power Solutions for key business sectors including data centres, construction, mining, healthcare, utility, and other industries.

The role

A position has become available for a Graduate Electrical Design Engineer within the Global Solution Engineering Group at Caterpillar (N.I.) situated at Larne. This is an excellent opportunity for a new Graduate or Graduate with previous work experience, to play a key role within the Caterpillar Electric Power Global Solutions Engineering Electrical Engineering team.

The Global Solution Engineering Group is responsible for the development of design to order customer specific products. This includes new product development, technical support for operations, processing of engineering changes, investigation & resolution of product quality issues.

The successful candidate will report to the Electrical Engineering Supervisor and will primarily carry out the concept and design of electrical engineering products for release to production in a manner to ensure products provide superior performance, best cost, durability, quality, and serviceability.

This role provides a great opportunity for a Graduate Engineer to develop their abilities within an experienced team working on projects for various export markets. For the right candidate, this role will include opportunities to travel for commissioning and product support.

Job duties and responsibilities 

This role is primarily focused on electrical systems, with key focus areas including:

  • Development of new products and components.
  • Design of controls and protection for generators, motors and related equipment.
  • Provide technical support to Manufacturing and Sales Departments.
  • Assist with product testing and/or evaluation when appropriate.
  • Remain current in technology developments and industry standards.

  • It is essential that applicants should have achieved or be on track to achieve a minimum of a 2:2 in one of the following disciplines: Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, Mechatronics, Integrated Mechanical & Electrical or similar relevant Electrical Engineering degree.

Recruitment Process Guidelines

Here is a brief overview of what you can expect when applying to our Early Career roles.

Online Application: The first stage of the process is to complete the online application and attach your CV, this must be done before the closing date of the role that you're applying for. Once we reach the close date, we will begin reviewing all our applications, this may take a little while and we will contact you as soon as possible to let you know if you have been successful in moving forward to the next stage.

Stage one – Video Interview: If selected, you will be invited to complete a user-friendly video interview which will then be reviewed by the Hiring Team. At this stage, if you are successful, you will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre which we anticipate will be held on 30th January 2025 onsite at our Larne facility, so please try to keep that date free. We would also recommend that you check your spam emails and your Workday account for updates.

Stage two - Assessment Centre: The Assessment Centre Day will look at a range of behaviours such as teamwork, decision-making, communication, and problem-solving. We aim to make these days fun, inclusive and as relaxed as possible.

Stage three – Offer: After the Assessment Centre, the Caterpillar team will review the feedback and extend offers to our preferred candidates, we aim to do this as quickly as possible. Graduates will start on 8th September 2025. We look forward to receiving your application to join Caterpillar!
