Your Early Careers Program

This role is part of the One Digital Early Careers program which supplies bp’s future pipeline of digital talent. Joiners become part of a diverse, global digital community who are helping to lead bp through the energy transition, to provide reliable, affordable, and lower carbon-energy to the world and achieve net-zero.

Early Careers Experience at bp

The One Digital program is two years, comprising two 12-month rotations within a dedicated digital discipline. Designed to give you a breadth of experience and the opportunity to build technical depth to apply to the most complex problems of the future. These rotations will be complemented by a technical development pathway for your discipline, which outlines the technical competencies you are working towards. Alongside this you’ll also complete our Ignite training modules which will support you to build your interpersonal skills.

Throughout the program you’ll have a dedicated support network to provide guidance on the program and advice on career development. You’ll also be a key part of the bp early careers community, with events, socials and the opportunity to network with other early careers from across bp.

Role and responsibilities

The high-performance computing (HPC) team operates bp’s supercomputing centre, which is used by scientists across the company to develop new technologies in subsurface imaging, simulations of hydrocarbon and carbon sequestration reservoirs, wind, molecular biology, lubricants, etc.

HPC Developers work alongside our customers in the technology and research teams to develop and optimize their simulation, ML and data processing tools. 

We are looking for candidates with enthusiasm for computational science, software development, and an interest in working with domain scientists to understand and develop their ideas into practical tools.

The role of the HPC developer can include:

  • Development and implementation of new scientific algorithms on our large-scale Linux clusters. This will often involve OpenMP and MPI programming on parallel computing systems.
  • Development and optimization of ML and reinforcement learning algorithms applied to subsurface resource and renewable energy problems.
  • Optimization of codes to ensure they run effectively on a variety of computer architectures, which may include CPUs and GPUs.
  • Development of software tools that improve our effectiveness at using large Linux clusters.
  • Development of visualization tools for scientific data.
  • Supporting research scientists with their software development projects.

Requirements

  • To apply for this role, you will need to be in your final year of study and be on track for a 2:1, or have completed your degree with a 2:1
  • PhD in degree in Engineering, Geophysics, Computer Science, Physics or Math 
  • Moderate programming experience in Python, Fortran, C/C++, MPI/OpenMP, TensorFlow/PyTorch or other scientific programming languages

You are also expected to have strong spoken and written English language skills, including business and technical English.  Language skills will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.

Reward

  • Starting Salary: £43,000
  • Sign on Bonus: £3,000 (One off payment, subject to tax and national insurance)
