We’re currently recruiting for a Junior Data Engineer to join our Information Services team. The nature of the role will be to support on Data Engineering activities whilst learning from and working closely with the Senior Data Engineer and Data Manager.

Reporting to the Data Manager you will be tasked with optimizing the flow of Data, ensuring the ongoing monitoring and correction of data quality issues, assist with data imports, identify additional new data sources, write ELT (extract, load, transform) scripts and provide support in reducing data silos to ensure a joined-up view of Blue Cross data.

This is a fantastic development opportunity for a recent graduate or an individual with some hands-on experience in a Data Engineering environment.

Data and Insights are pivotal to the success of Blue Cross, therefor our data and insights team play a pivotal role in translating user needs for data and insights into documented requirements, working closely with stakeholders to ensure that the design of solutions provide maximum value from Blue Cross data.

The D&I team have been through a recent restructure resulting in a huge uplift in how the organisation utilize data and insights, which helps Blue Cross in our commitment to providing lifelong support to pets and the people that love them.

More about the role

You will play an important role within the Data Team, providing outstanding services and support to our user base of around 750 staff members who work onsite, hybrid or remote.

  • Manage imports and exports of data to and from our CRM system
  • Support with continuous improvement for data processes, helping to implement new tools and approaches
  • Record, define and maintain standard operating procedures for continuity and consistency of service
  • Write ad-hoc SQL scripts to achieve short-term objectives
  • Input, import, query and export data into and from the CRM and related systems in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Review and update records in our CRM system on a regular basis to ensure accuracy and integrity of data
  • Coordinate routine database enquiries and carry out data cleansing processes
  • Ensure data import/export routines are performed to agreed SLAs
  • Aggregate data and prepare datasets to support the reporting needs of the organisation, including, but not limited to, reporting for Fundraising, Marketing & Communications, Public Affairs, Education, Contact Handling and our operational teams in Veterinary, Rehoming & Fostering, Behaviour and PBSS
  • Maintain and develop healthy relationships with key stakeholders
  • Work closely with the Data Manager and internal teams to help ensure that opportunities for data capture are optimised and captured data is in alignment with Blue Cross needs and objectives
  • Ensure data is used in accordance with Data Protection legislation and charity regulations at all times
  • Adhere to data quality standards, monitor and correct data quality issues
  • Query, test and verify datasets to ensure data is fit for data analysis and insights
  • Support strategic initiatives with data requirements where necessary

About you

You will be a natural critical thinker and problem solver with a data driven and analytical mindset who is passionate about data as well as developing your skills for the benefit of yourself and the Blue Cross organisation.

With a ‘customer first’ approach, you will have the ability to build and maintain healthy relationships with key stakeholders and the wider business and be comfortable with communicating technical information to both technical and non-technical colleagues whilst adapting your approach to suit your audience.

You will be juggling multiple projects, responsibilities, and priorities. To do this, you will be analytical by nature and highly organised so that you can meet deadlines whilst performing under pressure and not compromising the quality of your work or the team environment.

Knowledge, skills, and experience

  • Excellent numeracy skills
  • Proven analytical skills and experience in data manipulation
  • Computer literate with comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), with experience explaining technical concepts with non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work well with people at all levels of the organisation
  • Excellent time management
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to demonstrate, understand and apply our Blue Cross values

Although not essential, it would be great if you also had:

  • Experience working for a charity or not for profit (nice to have but NOT essential)
  • SQL coding experience
  • Programming experience
  • Experience of data entry into a database
  • Experience working with database solutions
  • Experience in data warehousing solutions to combine multiple data/application sources
  • Knowledge of GDPR and UK Data Protection legislation
  • Awareness of charity regulations in relation to data management
