About the role

We are looking for an ambitious, hard-working and committed graduate to learn all there is to know about cyber security through a broad range of tasks, including day-to-day administration of cybersecurity tools and devices. In your daily work, you will interact with a broad range of people from within BCC and externally, including suppliers and customers, technical specialists, non-specialists, peers and senior representatives. You will actively seek to understand current security threats in the IT environment and use various control methods and governance to minimise impact to Birmingham City Council. You will be joining the largest and one of the most diverse local authorities in the UK, serving just over 1 million residents and be part of our large IT and digital team in our Digital & Customer Service Directorate. This is at the heart of delivering over 250 services to our residents, business and visitors covering everything from bin collection and care to education and community services giving you the opportunity to unleash your digital talent across multiple areas.

This is unprecedented opportunity, where there is a serious investment in cyber security, a solid strategy to get behind, and a new CIO, Cheryl Doran, who is heavily committed in building great digital services within local government.

What will you be doing?

  • Conduct day-to-day administration of cybersecurity tools and devices
  • Provide support for security information and event management (SIEM)
  • Distribute appropriate threat intelligence to senior managers, IT&D staff and the wider business
  • Provide assurance in security operation and services, as well as staying current to potential threats
  • Perform vulnerability testing and risk assessments to identify system risks
  • Analyse and evaluate security threats and hazards to systems, services and processes
  • Provide cyber incident response support
  • Develop and maintain accurate documentation for security systems and procedures
  • Identify opportunities for improvement
  • Support risk assessments and identify appropriate controls activities to reduce risk
  • Communicate courteously and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders over the telephone, face to face and in writing including via email

Skills and experience

You will have

  • a relevant graduate level qualification or equivalent
  • a general understanding of Cyber Security
  • understanding of the basic Cyber Security risk
  • work experience in public sector and/or experience of working in a corporate environment
  • knowledge of some corporate applications.
  • experience of using IT systems that have security controls
  • experience of online applications that require authentication
  • strong IT skills with experience of using Microsoft office software (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • strong written and verbal communication skills to explain solutions in a clear and concise manner
  • strong organisation and problem-solving skills
  • the ability to work flexibly and as part of a team
