The opportunity
The Acoustics, Audio-Visual and Theatre Consulting teams at Arup provide effective & professional services to our clients. Our Consultants and Psychologists provide theatre and venue consultancy to arts, culture and entertainment clients – for experiences, places, buildings and districts as well as working on projects from architectural acoustics; environmental noise and vibration; building services noise and sound systems design theatres, studios and concert venues; to master-planning entire cultural districts.
Due to the nature of our work you will have the opportunity to gain a broad range of experience, including planning and feasibility studies; environmental and health impact assessments; building and infrastructure design; noise modelling; on-site measurements; auralisation and sound visualisation (including Arup SoundLab and i¦Lab); as well as many other activities.
Graduate Acoustic Consultant - London, Southampton, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool

Our international acoustic design team provides services in architectural, building, transport and environmental acoustics and vibration. We help clients achieve their aspirations by guiding the acoustic design of projects from conception and planning through design, construction, testing and commissioning

Your project involvement will be extremely diverse and likely to include architectural acoustics; environmental noise and vibration; building services noise and sound systems design. You will be working across a wide variety of markets including performing arts, education, healthcare, commercial, residential, sport, rail, highways, aviation and energy.
Ideally you will have the following qualifications:
- Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in acoustics, environmental science, applied sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering or physics. Other subjects will be considered if you can demonstrate a strong interest in working and learning further in a technically demanding environment.
- Modules such as sound, acoustics, waves, vibrations or digital/coding related modules.
Interest or skills in any of the following would also be useful:

Graduate Theatre and Audio Visual Consultant - London, Southampton, Manchester
Our team works on venues for performance and visual art on a local and international scale. Our work includes theatres, concert halls, cinemas, museums and galleries, and music and film studios. We also work on sound and video systems outside of performance venues - in offices, hotels, shopping centres and healthcare.
We design technical systems (stage machinery, lighting, video, audio, broadcast, digital infrastructure) and input to project vision and briefing, architectural design, operational space planning, auditorium design, and liaise with other experts to create world-class experiences. We work closely with our clients, public authorities, operators, architects, engineers and theatre staff, guiding projects from inception and planning, through design, testing and commissioning, as well as consulting on in-use operations.
We are looking for a Graduate Consultant to join our team. From your first day you'll be working with our UK and global teams, engaged on projects ranging in scale, duration and design stage. You will be supported and mentored as you progress and broaden your skills, working under the guidance of our experienced team and developing expertise through a combination of project work and dedicate training.
Our work encompasses:
- Production and gallery lighting and lighting control systems
- Audio-visual systems, including sound, video, communications and projection
- Stage machinery and automation control systems
- Venue planning and operational design, including back of house facilities and public spaces
- Auditorium design and modelling, including sightline analysis
- Visual arts strategies and cultural master-planning for cities and districts
- Visualisation, auralizations, and the development of new digital tools for design and communication
You will have the opportunity to:
- Develop innovative solutions within constraints of project budgets
- Undertake conceptual through to technical design
- Participate in discussions with clients, relevant communities and other stakeholders
- Undertake calculations, drawings and modelling of venue technical systems
- Prepare presentations and technical documents for clear communication with design teams and users
- Contribute to and review designs of other parties
- Review systems onsite and assist with specialist venue systems inspection and commissioning

- You may be an avid reader of industry news and publications, and have a view on the future of arts and culture and / or audio visual design
- You may have personal projects that have developed relevant technical, creative and/or design skills
- You may have reflections on your interactions with the arts, culture and entertainment sector that you'd like to apply to your design work
