The team
The Assets and Operations team is part of Advisory and Digital Services and helps to deliver and sustain organisational and operational outcomes by supporting clients’ use of technology, primarily in transportation, to achieve their objectives. The team also supports the development of strategies, implementation plans, governance and performance management. The team supports clients in the management of operations and maintenance contracts relating to transportation and digital technology.
Here’s a look at some of the work the Assets and Operations team is engaged in:
- Intelligent Mobility/Mobility Pricing - Engaging clients with transport mobility needs across their systems, operations, pricing & payments projects, data sharing platforms, future mobility opportunities and electromobility advancements, using our digital and technology domain knowledge across the full life cycle of clients’ assets. We support our clients in gathering, analysing and utilising data and at various project stages from strategy development to implementation. Some key areas of work are in Intelligent Transport Systems, Tolling, Smart Cities, traffic signal design, C-ITS and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs).
- Digital and Technology Asset Management - Using our transport technology and asset management expertise to help clients to maintain, operate and transform their assets across their full life cycle. We support clients by applying Asset Management principles to assess the status of their assets, develop maintenance and renewals plans, develop renewals budget forecasts and develop whole life cost models so that they can accurately forecast future budget implications of decisions.

The Assets & Operations team integrates technology, infrastructure, and business processes to develop intelligent transport solutions for our clients. Typical work includes the design, piloting, trialling and deployment of transport technology for use on motorways, in tunnels, or for bus priority systems; the creation of standards and strategies, or the analysis of data to verify success and guide improvements.
This is an office-based role, with successful candidates expected to work 5 days per week in the Arup office in Cork or Dublin.
As a work placement student in the Assets and Operations team at Arup, you will:
- Support turning technical recommendations into transportation plans and project deliverables
- Practice creative applications of technology to develop design solutions
- Develop communication skills, including report writing and visual representations
- Attend and participate in meetings – listen, ask questions
- Be involved in discussions with team members to gain knowledge & experience
- Undertake analytical research to develop, document, present concepts and design ideas
- Review project documentation, applicable codes and standards to assist with preparation of reports, presentations, drawings and/or sketches
- Give structure to ideas – lots of “taking a first pass” at spreadsheets, reports and analyses for discussion later rather than instruction

- Civil / Transportation Engineering
- Transport Planning
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering

- Business Information Systems
We also value:
- Experience of producing technical presentations and reports, knowledge sharing with peers
- History of academic research, technical presentations, and technical report writing
- Experience with any of the following: AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Visio, PowerPoint, or Project, or analysis packages e.g. SPSS
- Knowledge of transport technology, such as traffic signal design
- Evidence of teamwork and leadership in academic or extracurricular field
- The ability to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work and deliver to deadlines
Projects
As a part of the Intelligent Mobility team in Arup you would be given the opportunity to work on a wide scope of projects. Below are examples of projects that the team is involved in:
- Transport Infrastructure Ireland; ITS strategy and implementation– Arup’s transport specialists and digital consultants are helping TII to plan and implement a country-wide ITS strategy, exploring the interactions between transport, people, the environment and technology to ensure the sustainable management of the national 100,000km road network.
- Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project – multi-disciplinary consulting engineering services for the national energy saving project to upgrade existing lanterns with energy-efficient LED
- Bus Connects – design and advisory services for the expansion of transport routes
- Cork City Council – Helping delivering strategies for ITS and lighting for the city’s future. Implementing the latest cycling detection equipment across the city network
- Bus Priority Scheme, Davao City Philippines – technical advisor for the design and procurement of a new city wide bus system which will supply low emission buses & depots and a city wide bus priority on all key routes
