Are you looking for a placement in Artificial Intelligence research? Would you like to discover the work of an artificial intelligence researcher/data scientist? Then apply now! We look forward to you joining us as a student at Airbus Central Research and Technology.

Our AI Research Team is part of Airbus Central Research & Technology - leveraging the latest science to push forward new technologies and new approaches to improve Airbus products. You will be working with a transnational team on AI topics such as Reinforcement Learning, Explainable and Trustworthy AI, Human-AI Interaction, and AI for Sustainability. You can contribute to technologies that will have an impact across the Airbus business, not just in products but improving how we work to become safer, more efficient and more sustainable.

What you will be doing

During your placement you will gain an insight into our research on artificial intelligence (and data science) algorithms and solutions for challenges across all Airbus divisions within an international and multidisciplinary team, working together across multiple countries.

Being able to explain the outcome of an AI model is key to improve the acceptance of such algorithms in operations or to certification authorities. For instance, when a task is automatically assigned to a worker, the manager might need to understand the reasons why this worker and this task were chosen. Also, when a schedule is impossible to get given the constraints, it is crucial to understand how to relax these constraints to get a schedule that is acceptable.

As part of your internship, you will therefore look into the latest concepts and algorithms that tackle the explainability of decision making algorithms. The skills you will develop will vary depending on the needs of the business, your own interests, and the expertise available on the team.

Working in a research team, your focus will be on contributing to solving hard problems and creating proofs of concepts rather than implementing or optimizing existing solutions. You will work alongside highly educated scientists (often PhD level) with industrial experience, as well as collaborating with other parts of the business, and academic and other industry partners.

You will gain experience in working with AI frameworks and workflows, as well as cloud computing, web services, etc. Training and onboarding will be provided, but you find it easier joining us if you have some understanding of or experience with: Python; TensorFlow; PyTorch; Keras; and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

We offer you some exciting tasks:

  • Understand the basic concepts of decision making algorithms and customer use-cases.
  • Carry on a comprehensive literature review and survey on recent explainability methods for decision making algorithms.
  • Develop demonstrators in line with customer expectations integrating latest work developed on explainability of decision making for concept(s) and algorithm(s) for evaluation.
  • Assess the performance of the achieved concept and algorithm on use-case data.

Requirements

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Studying towards a degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or equivalent;
  • Experience in Python programming and use of common packages like pandas, matplotlib, plotly, networkx etc...;
  • Knowledge of decision making algorithms;
  • Ability to summarize findings in technical reports;
  • Fluency in English;
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Eligibility to gain UK SC Security Clearance OR You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).
