Nicola's Experience | Tech Graduate at T. Rowe Price

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

We caught up with Nicola about her journey into Tech at T. Rowe Price. Nicola explains what a day in her life looks like, plus some top tips to kickstart an exciting career in the sector.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey into Tech

My journey into Tech was a bit unconventional. I started university studying Philosophy but then converted to Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence after my first year. I was really happy with my decision as I found what I was learning very interesting, and I was motivated to do more research outside my studies. It was a steep learning curve because I didn’t have any experience with coding or knowledge of exactly what Computer Science entailed, but I think that added to the excitement of my journey. Once I graduated, I decided to pursue a career in software engineering as I really enjoyed the problem-solving and collaboration aspects of my degree, which are also present in this role.

What inspired you to apply to T. Rowe Price?

My inspiration was a combination of the specification of the role itself and also what I had read about T. Rowe Price online. In hindsight, I would say my knowledge of T. Rowe Price prior to my application was quite small as throughout the process, I discovered more about the company, its culture and was greatly encouraged by my findings. I recall spending the day in London at the assessment centre and really feeling as though I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience, leaving at the end of the day thinking I really want to work here.

What does a day in your life look like?

In my team, we normally have our daily stand-up call every morning for around half an hour, where we update each other on what we are currently working on and the associated successes, challenges and goals moving forward.  As an associate software engineer, most of my day is spent working on a project either individually or with support from one of the senior engineers in my team. What I do day-to-day varies, but on the whole, you'll find me either implementing a new feature, fixing an existing bug or testing.

What’s the culture like at T. Rowe Price?

The culture here is very open and friendly. Everyone is always happy to help, and I never feel like I can’t ask a question or ask for support. I am also encouraged to develop my skills further and there are plenty of resources with which I can do so.

What has been your favourite project so far?

My favourite project so far is the one I'm currently working on. It provides me with the scope to do a bit of everything, develop my competency in each area, and find the one I like the most.

What is T. Rowe Price doing to increase diversity in the sector?

T. Rowe Price has done quite a lot to increase diversity in technology. They've done this through growing and supporting their diverse workforce and enhancing their inclusive culture. For example, launching the 'Women in Technology' programme created a space where we are able to have open discussions about various topics such as gender bias and inclusion, while also sharing ideas on navigating the technology sector as a woman.

What advice would you give to members, with a similar background, wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Research both the company you want to work for and the role itself to give yourself the best chance. Also, wherever possible, spend some time developing the skills required for the role. During interviews, be honest, it is okay to not have the answers to all the questions. And finally, always keep in mind that the application process is also about finding out if the company is a good fit for you, as much as it is about whether you're a good fit for them.
