My Internship Experience at Pernod Ricard: James Lambton, Procurement & Supply Chain

Book open Reading time: 3 mins
James Pernod

I study Economics and Global Sustainable Development at the University of Warwick, with a particular interest in sustainable energy production and carbon emission mitigation. Outside of my studies, I play lots of sports including rugby for my university, and 5-a-side football at Pernod Ricard.

What is your role and how long have you been at Pernod Ricard?

My role is Procurement and Supply Chain Executive Intern, and I’ve been at Pernod Ricard for just over 2 months. So far, the role involves reviewing the stock status of items in our warehouses and finding creative solutions to reduce storage costs.

What inspired you to apply for this role / Pernod Ricard?

I was particularly drawn to Pernod Ricard because of their keen focus on Conviviality. The company has such an outgoing, sociable culture that really aligned with my own values. It’s important to enjoy going to work, and Pernod Ricard has such an enjoyable working environment.

What has been the single most important thing you learnt so far in your job?

Communication skills have been the single most important thing I’ve learnt so far. In a working environment, everybody operates differently and therefore I’ve learned the importance of adapting my communication style to different colleagues, depending on how I believe they will respond best.

What would a ‘normal’ day look like for someone in your role?

In the morning, I’ll usually go through my emails and finish off any admin I have. I also have a morning meeting every day with my team, too. From then, I’ll continue creating reports about warehouse stock, contacting people who can help me find solutions. Usually at lunch, me and some other interns will play table tennis outside, which is great fun. If it’s a Monday or a Friday, the staff shop opens so on these days I’ll usually be found in there!

What do you find most interesting with the sector you’re in?

The thing I find most interesting is seeing the work that the Operations Department do come to life. I was able to visit our warehouse up in Rugby as part of a work trip, and this was great for my understanding on how orders that take place from our desks in Chiswick are actioned up in Rugby.

What is the culture like?

Very social. There are plenty of opportunities to socialise and be convivial with colleagues, and others from around the business. There is a Thursday night bar every week, and many events that interns have the opportunity to attend. Everybody is friendly, and happy to help with any questions.

Have you had the opportunity to get involved in any activities outside work?

Yes. Twice a week, I play 5-a-side football with Pernod Ricard. This is a great opportunity for me to network with those in the wider business. There is also touch rugby with PRUK, and Chiswick Park offers lunchtime football, netball, table tennis, chess, and other activities including a zipline!

How did you find the application process?

I felt really comfortable during the assessment centre. Immediately my interviewers made me feel at home, and they were very friendly. We heard back very quickly about our progress with our application.

Finally, any tips for anyone who’d like to apply for a role at Pernod Ricard?

Be yourself.
