My name is Sam, I am studying Economics at the University of Bath, and this year I am working in the Commercial Excellence team at Vertex. We are a part of the Global Insights Analytics and Commercial Operations Team at the international headquarters in Paddington. My role is very varied, but I do a lot of work with the Key Account Managers stationed around the globe, providing them will the tools and assistance to maximize their productivity.
What is it like to work at Vertex?
Each day is different. Some days the atmosphere is relaxed, and you can methodically work through your long-term projects. Other days, the intensity is turned up and you are racing to meet fast-approaching deadlines. This mixture keeps you on your toes, so you are never bored. Furthermore, the work that falls into your inbox is varied, one day you’re completing data analysis, another day you are presenting to your team. This, again, keeps you engaged and allows you to develop a comprehensive toolbox of skills.
What are your top tips for candidates looking to apply for an Industrial Placement?
My top tip for any candidate looking to apply for an industrial placement is to be strict with the companies you apply to. Take the time to research the company, the role, and only proceed if it’s something you are passionate about. This will help for a collection of reasons. First, strictly selecting the companies you apply to will reduce your number of applications, allowing you to focus more attention on each one and increasing your odds of success. Second, your passion and interest will stand out in interviews, improving your chances of landing the role. Thirdly, it reduces the number of rejections you are likely to encounter, which makes it easier to maintain your morale throughout the application process.
Why should members consider an Industrial Placement role at Vertex?
Firstly, the company is rapidly expanding, and this creates an exciting opportunity for placement students. New responsibilities arise throughout the year, preventing any sense of monotony. Furthermore, this creates a real need for placement students, so you are given real responsibility to add value to the company from very early on.
Secondly, the company really looks after its employees, looking out for their well-being, with a generous benefits package that ensures a comfortable work-life balance.
Thirdly, there is an opportunity to explore throughout the company. Cross-functional teams allow you to gain experience in a collection of different areas within the company. There is the flexibility for you to “gig” with other teams to develop skills you would not otherwise access. Finally, senior leadership really encourage everyone to understand all aspects of the business, making it easier for you to gain insight into every corner of the corporate environment.
What’s next for your career?
I will be returning to university for my final year of study after I finish my Industrial Placement. As of yet, I have not received an offer to return to Vertex once I graduate. However, I am enjoying my time here, so when the time comes, if the right vacancy is available, I’ll likely be applying to return here as a full-time employee.
