Mohib's Journey: ITW Graduate Scheme

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

My name is Mo, and I'm 24 years old. I've been with ITW for nearly three years now. I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Economics and joined ITW in 2021. Currently, I'm working as a product manager in the Offsite Business unit.

Outside of work, I have a passion for mixed martial arts and train as an amateur MMA fighter six times a week. When I'm not training or working, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends.

What made you apply for the ITW Graduate Scheme in the first place?

The main appeal of the programme was the diverse range of experiences it offered. My long-term goal has always been to pursue a general management position, but the path to reaching that role wasn't entirely clear. The graduate scheme seemed like the perfect way to gain a broad spectrum of experience, positioning me for more senior roles in the future. Additionally, I've always wanted to experience travel for work, and the opportunity to work abroad through the grad scheme was a significant bonus.

What was your experience like during the Graduate Scheme? What rotations did you do and what did you learn?

I completed two 12-month rotations, starting with a year in Sales within the Wood Division and finishing with a year in Operations in the Offsite Division. During my first year, I developed a range of customer-facing skills, gained valuable account management experience, and honed technical skills such as Excel proficiency and presentation abilities. In my second year, I delved into the inner workings of a production facility, cultivating a continuous improvement mindset with a focus on safety, 5S, and sustainability. I also continued to enhance my technical skills in Excel and presentations.

Throughout both rotations, I worked cross-functionally and developed strong communication skills with colleagues and senior management. The experience was both challenging and rewarding, and an added benefit was that I had time engage in extracurricular work groups (ERGs) and focus on personal development, branding, and networking outside of my day-to-day role.

How has the graduate scheme helped you in your ITW Career?

The graduate scheme has been instrumental in shaping my ITW career, providing me with a broad range of experiences and learning opportunities that have deepened my understanding of both the commercial and operational aspects of the business. It has not only equipped me with the skills needed to transition smoothly into my new role but also fostered a mindset centred around continuous improvement—both in the quality of work we produce and in my own career development.

Additionally, the scheme has enabled me to build a wide network of contacts, which has proven invaluable when moving across business units within ITW and collaborating cross-functionally on projects.

What advice would you give to future applicants of the ITW Graduate Scheme?

I would encourage future applicants to be authentic in their applications. The graduate scheme is designed to develop the skills and knowledge you’ll need, so the most important thing is to let your true self shine through. What really makes ITW special is the way people connect on both a personal and professional level. The company fosters an environment where the hierarchy feels flat, and no one is made to feel superior to anyone else, allowing for close, meaningful relationships.

When applying, focus on showcasing who you are as a person. Highlight your willingness to contribute to your team and collaborate, rather than just emphasizing your ability to work hard—that’s the baseline expectation. Show that you're someone who wants to grow alongside your colleagues and make a positive impact.
