Meet Sumren Aziz – Subject Matter Expert, UK Lean Six Sigma Team

What is your role?

I’m a Subject Matter Expert in the UK Lean Six Sigma Team, currently in a Black Belt Development role. Since this is a central position, I work remotely and travel to various sites as needed. My primary focus is on productivity projects across the UK, while also undergoing Lean Six Sigma training and coaching cross-functional teams and colleagues at different sites on the methodology.

Why did you apply for the Supply Chain placement year at PepsiCo?

I completed my Engineering Operations placement from July 2021 to July 2022 at the Quaker Oats site in Cupar, Scotland. With a background in MEng Mechanical Engineering, I developed an interest in three career paths: design, sustainable energy, and manufacturing. While my degree provided strong insights into design and sustainable energy, I felt that hands-on experience was essential to fully understand the manufacturing field. That's why I applied for a manufacturing-based placement, specifically at PepsiCo. Its global reach and cross-functional environment offered abundant opportunities, and I was right—I’ve worked on projects related to two of my key interests and plan to incorporate the third as I grow in my career!

What exciting opportunities did you experience during your student placement year?

During my student placement year, I had several exciting opportunities. I became a certified Kaizen Leader after completing a weeklong course and a project focused on reducing product variability through the kiln. I also visited oat suppliers to discuss future opportunities and challenges. Additionally, I built a detailed process map of the entire production process, identifying opportunities for improvement by consulting with operators and site leadership. I also got to plan and lead a product trial, coordinating with cross-functional and international teams from engineering, R&D, safety, and finance.

What support were you given throughout your student placement year?

Throughout my placement year, I received incredible support. Carl Andrews, the Site Operations Manager and my line manager, made sure I had opportunities to network and gain exposure by organizing various connects and site visits. My mentors and the Cupar team were genuinely invested in my personal development. If I was interested in a project outside my role, like shadowing maintenance technicians, they were always willing to help organize those opportunities. The support was truly endless and often given without even needing to ask—I couldn’t have asked for a better team.

What has made you proud to work for PepsiCo?

PepsiCo’s commitment to personal development is remarkable. The company is even supporting my journey to become a chartered engineer by allowing me to work on sustainability projects outside my immediate role.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is considering a student placement year at PepsiCo?
