Meet Melissa – R&D Product Development Senior Associate, Europe Flavours & Seasonings

"One of the most exciting moments is seeing a product I’ve worked on hit the supermarket shelves. It’s incredible to know that people all around the world are enjoying something I helped create!"

What is your role?

I’m a product developer for the Europe Seasoning team, where I work on developing flavours and seasonings for beloved snacks like Cheetos, Lay’s, and Walkers. I’ve been with PepsiCo for two years, and one year in my current role.

Melissa – R&D Product Development Senior Associate

Why did you decide to apply for an Industrial Placement at PepsiCo?

I am a massive foodie, which is what led me to this career path. I have always loved cooking, baking, and being in the kitchen. I followed a fairly traditional schooling route doing GCSEs and A-levels; however, I didn’t get the A-level grades required to go to university and study Food Science and Nutrition.

I took some time out, spending a year traveling through SE Asia and South America, and the following year decided to move to Leeds and go back to college to study an access course in science. This access course then got me into the University of Leeds to study an integrated master’s course in Food Science and Nutrition. This course was 4 years long and included a year working in industry, which allowed me to graduate with a BSc and a master’s in Food Science and Nutrition.

I spent my 3rd year at PepsiCo within R&D working in the Food Safety team. This role in food safety encompassed overseeing all aspects of innovation, from evaluating new ingredients and raw materials to collaborating with factories on new product development.
