My name is Malik. I am a General Management Graduate Trainee at ITW Construction Products, UK and Nordics. I have a passion for construction, and I love to explore technological advancements.

I enjoy sports, especially football and basketball. I also enjoy playing Call of Duty with my friends. I also enjoy other varieties of things like cooking and learning random stuff.

What made you apply for the ITW Graduate Scheme?

I’ve always been drawn to the construction industry. It’s interesting to watch an idea transform into architectural masterpieces. This led me to intern at a construction firm right after earning my BSc in Psychology. It was such an eye-opener that I decided to pursue an MSc in Project Management.

So, why ITW? I wanted to dive deeper into the construction products side of things. We often focus on the finished architectural masterpieces without giving much thought to the materials and products that make them possible. ITW Construction Products is one of the pacesetting companies in the construction products industry, and working at ITW will provide me with invaluable insights into the efforts that drive the construction products sector. Plus, who wouldn’t want to work for a multinational company that’s all about quality, excellence and collaboration? It’s a win-win!

What was the interview process like?

The interview process was straightforward and enjoyable! It was personal, which I really appreciated. No endless online assessments that feel like they’re designed to test your sanity rather than your skills. Instead, I had a friendly initial screening interview, followed by an all- expenses-paid trip to the assessment centre in Glenrothes, Scotland.

One of the highlights was the “Spaghetti Tower Marshmallow Game.” It felt more like a game night with friends than an interview task. And the final three rounds of panel interviews? They were like casual chats with friends. Even if I hadn’t gotten the job, I would still rate this as the best interview experience ever.

What was your reaction to getting the graduate position?

I remember it like it was yesterday. I had just gotten home from my old job and was in the middle of a nap when my phone rang. It was the hiring manager calling to give feedback about the assessment centre. When they offered me the position, I was totally gobsmacked and speechless. I wanted to scream with joy, but I had to maintain my steeze! One of the best moments of my life so far.

What was your first impression of ITW?

Walking into ITW was like stepping into a new world. My first day was at the Glenrothes office and I was impressed by how friendly and welcoming everyone was. Everyone was professional yet relaxed, and I immediately felt at home. I am excited about being part of the ITW family.

What have you enjoyed learning during your first month with the business?

I have enjoyed learning about the company’s unique 80/20 business model, which everyone speaks fluently. It has been fascinating to see how this model drives efficiency and continuous improvement. I’m looking forward to speaking the 80/20 language and applying it in my work. I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting some incredible people who’ve made my learning experience insightful. My manager has been outstanding, no question is too big or too small for him. I remember one time he used a whiteboard to explain one of ITW Construction Products’ business concepts to me. It felt like I was back in school, but way more fun.

I have also been impressed by the collaborative and supportive work environment at ITW. Everyone is willing to share their knowledge with me, and this has made my first month both enjoyable and educational. I am eager to continue learning and growing with ITW. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
