Living in London: what I’ve learnt after relocating

Sophia Hübscher

Having moved countries for work several times in the past, I can say that my relocation to London was one of the easiest I have experienced so far. After staying with family upon my arrival in London, I found a shared flat within two weeks of searching - and have been loving it, especially since I can commute by boat. I had mentally prepared for the high living costs (growing up in Switzerland definitely helps with the shock!) and made sure to inform myself beforehand to accurately budget once I arrived.

Moving to London was one of the best decisions I have made for many reasons: the cultural offerings and variety of people make it a place where everyone and anyone feels included. Diversity and vibrancy is what defines London. If you ask me about the most surprising factors I will answer: weather and food. Neither of them are nearly as bad as their reputation. In fact, the food scene is the best I have ever experienced as you can find every type of food imaginable and they cater to every diet.

It has also benefitted my career in several ways - the biggest advantage is certainly working with people from all walks of life in an international, dynamic and fast-paced environment. Since I started working at AlphaSights, I have never been bored and my role has taught me to adapt to changing priorities more quickly and efficiently than any role I have had before.

I have always found languages to be one of the most helpful tools, be it personally or professionally, and I am happy to have found a role which allows me to use them on a daily basis. At AlphaSights, I speak with clients and experts daily, juggling multiple projects covering vastly different industries and learn something new every day. The role often requires me to connect with experts in a range of languages I speak, be it in German, French, English, Italian or Spanish which is always met with enthusiasm. It also allows me to delve deeper into their experience thereby ensuring we provide our clients with highly-targeted experts. I really love the rush of adrenalin I get when I know I have found the perfect expert!

I would like to conclude by saying don't hesitate to move to London. It is a beautiful, vibrant and dynamic city and you will always, always find entertainment, activities and people who will perfectly suit you.
