Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a 3rd seat trainee at CMS, currently sitting with the Real Estate Disputes team in Sheffield.

I grew up in North Wales and then studied Anthropology and Law at the London School of Economics. In my spare time, I enjoy hikes with my dogs, cooking and travelling (in the pre-Covid world!).

Why did you go into law?

When I was younger, I liked the idea of a career where I could help others (although I held a misconception that a lawyer was a person in court wearing a gown and wig!). I started to research into being a solicitor during my school years and came across commercial law. I found the work to be fast paced and was particularly interested in how client facing it was, and I knew that it was something which would continue to challenge me.

Tell us a bit about your experience at CMS/working in law?

In my second year at university I was a CMS brand ambassador, which was an excellent opportunity to get to know the firm. I then attended the CMS Academy, our next generation vacation scheme. This involved a week developing our commercial awareness, learning about the business of law and then two further weeks of work experience. My time at the CMS Academy then led to my training contract offer.

My previous seats were in Real Estate Transactions and Restructuring and Insolvency in London. I’m now in my 3rd seat with the Property Litigation team in Sheffield. It’s an interesting time to be learning the ropes - we must be responsive and sensitive to Covid-19 and many of the usual remedies that we would advise our commercial landlord clients of are restricted. This requires us to react quickly to changing legislation and to think creatively!

What is the culture like at the firm?

CMS is an inclusive firm, with a friendly and approachable feel to it. We have a flat structure, which means you experience working with individuals of all levels. Everyone is willing to sit down and talk you through things, including the PSLs, who are very invested in your development.

Culture is a hard thing to pinpoint though – I would encourage everyone to attend open days, webinars and events to really get a feel for the firm.

What essential piece of advice have you learnt whilst working at CMS?

Ask questions – people are happy to help those who are enthusiastic.

Play to your strengths! There is no one ‘type’ of solicitor, so don’t mould yourself to fit in.
