A Day in the Life of a Client Executive – Grace

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

What is your role and how long have you been at Hudson Sandler?

I’m a Client Executive and have been at Hudson Sandler since August 2023.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

I grew up in Cambridge before attending Bristol University to pursue a Bachelor's degree in History. Before that, I had the opportunity to take a year off and go traveling. After finishing my degree, I started working for a boutique PR and Events agency called Wardman Communications. I've been living in London for just over a year now and enjoy eating out, visiting exhibitions, and running.

What inspired you to apply for this role/this company?

I first heard of Hudson Sandler through my previous school’s network. I had a conversation with a partner at a large PR agency and she recommended Hudson Sandler as a great place to work. After researching Hudson Sandler, I was inspired to apply due to the diverse range of clients in their portfolio, as well as the many industries they cover. I was also drawn to Hudson Sandler’s focus on emerging markets, as they have offices in Nigeria and Kenya.

What has been the single most important thing you learnt so far in your job?

I’d say translating my writing style from a university environment into a work environment. In PR your audience is entirely different, so learning how to tailor my writing has been a valuable lesson (and still a work in progress!)

What would a ‘normal’ day look like for someone in your role?

As a Client Executive, you would usually be in the office. I start my days by scanning the national media for any stories related to my clients that I can flag for them. Sometimes, this involves sharing article summaries, or it could be using a story to generate an angle the client could comment on. After this, I usually update a Work in Progress (WIP) report ahead of client calls, which essentially acts as a tracker for all the activity the team is working on for a client. Throughout the day, we usually have client calls during which I capture minutes and actions to collate into a note to share with the team internally.

When working on corporate accounts (which I primarily do), you would also find yourself pitching your clients to journalists, writing longer opinion pieces, or drafting press releases. You would also be asked to get involved in research tasks, such as creating media lists, searching for forward features, or looking into potential events and awards.

What do you find most interesting with the sector/industry you’re in?

I enjoy the dynamic nature of Public Relations – no day is the same! You have to adapt to and navigate the evolving media landscape constantly, which makes the work you do incredibly current and interesting. Additionally, you get to work with a diverse range of businesses. For instance, I work with a law firm, travel company, and research organisation, allowing me to learn a lot about different sectors.

What is the company culture like?

Hudson Sandler has a very inclusive culture. Lots of events and socials are organised throughout the year so you are able to get to know everyone in the agency, and not just your client teams.

Finally, any tips for anyone who’d like to apply for a role at Hudson Sandler?

Show a strong interest in the media by staying updated on the latest business news or listening to business podcasts, as this is what drives a lot of the work we do! Additionally, highlight your organisational skills and time management, as these are key qualities for a Client Executive.
