Why did you join the HSBC UK grad programme?
Prior to joining the grad scheme I took part in the Internship programme. During the 8 weeks as an intern I was able to gain insight into the world of banking and the different paths available here at HSBC. I believe the graduate development team also had a large role to play, they really know how to prepare and take care of you during the transition from university to work life.
Briefly describe your time on the programme.
Whilst being here at HSBC I have been able to experience the front line and risk. Each of these are in different worlds and so I have been able to gain knowledge in different areas of the bank. In addition, working in the front line and in risk requires different skillset such as communication, presentation and analytics, which I was able to develop during my two placements.
What has been your biggest success during your time at HSBC UK?
As a grad you are able to take part in a wide range of early career groups - I am currently a member in the Ethnic Diversity Early Careers Community (EDECC), as a member I was fortunate to organise a breakfast networking event in Birmingham alongside another graduate. In this event we invited senior stakeholders and allowed our graduates to build their knowledge and relationship with different business areas.
How do you find working in a hybrid environment?
Working in a hybrid environment allows me to focus on my work life balance. Having the opportunity to work at home I find it easy to stay motivated and focused, I do find working in the office is what I prefer because it is a lot easier to network and ask questions, as a graduate you will have lots of questions because of how quick each rotation goes by.
How would you describe the graduate community here at HSBC UK?
The graduate community are very supportive and understanding in different way both with your professional and personal development. They consider your well-being to be one of the top priorities since they understand the transition from university to work life can be challenging.
How would you describe the working culture at HSBC UK? T
he work culture is nothing like I would’ve imagined. Before joining the bank I thought it was going to be very strict and rigid. However, In HSBC everyone is welcoming and willing to share their experience and knowledge. Overall, it is a comfortable and relaxed environment where you can confidently work at your maximum capabilities.
Are you involved in any extracurricular activities at HSBC UK?
At the moment I am part of the Ethnic Diversity Early Careers Community and the Neurodiversity Working Group as a comms lead. Additionally, I am part of the Gradub team which maintain and improve the graduate website.
