Diversity at HFW: Gender Equality Network

We recently caught up with Sarah at HFW to find out more about the firm’s Gender Equality Network…

Introduction to yourself and your route into HFW

I am a Partner in the Commodities group in the London office at HFW.  I have been with the firm for 28 years, my entire career, including my training contract (and actually as a vacation scheme student in 1994).  I have had two children, one while I was an Associate and the second as a Partner.

What were the main reasons you wanted to join HFW over other firms?

My reasons were those of most students – I liked the culture and people of the firm, the work was interesting, and they paid for me to go to law school.

Please could you give us a general insight into what diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging looks like at HFW

HFW is not a "one size fits all firm" – if anything, it is the opposite of that. Our Partners are diverse and different. Partners meetings can be interesting (and sometimes loud) as a result.  There is a place for everyone – from whatever background.  I was the first in my family to go to university and I am by no means unique in the partnership.  Because we are from diverse backgrounds, I hope that everyone can  look up and  see a mentor /role model at the firm

Could you please share more detail on the Gender Equality Network and how it is run?

The Gender Equality Network is open to all staff – male or female, professional or business services, of whatever seniority.  I convene and chair meetings with the help of our CR team.  The agenda can vary – either a member can bring a topic for discussion to the network, or the board will ask the network for its views on principles or policies. The network's recommendations are taken by me to the diversity committee which overseas all of the equality networks. Each network has a representative on the committee.

How does this network support employees at HFW?

The network aims to provide an open forum for all at HFW to raise gender related issues.  It provides a place where people can discuss issues which are of mutual importance and a means to have those issues brought to the attention of the committee and the board.  It sits alongside the other networks and other staff forums (for example, regular Town Halls with the Managing and Senior Partners that are open to all).

Anything else you’d like to add on diversity at HFW or anything else more generally?

I previously chaired the diversity committee for several years.  It is inspiring to work with other Partners who bring their own experiences and wisdom to various aspects of diversity and allow us to learn from each other.
