Below, Emily Buckley, an associate at Greenhill has provided insight into her time with there from an intern in 2018, to a grad hire in 2019.

''Working at Greenhill in small deal teams, you get significant exposure to not only senior bankers within the firm but also C suite executives on the client side of things, this experience brings with it ample of opportunities to take responsibility and demonstrate leadership from very early on in your career.''

Why did you decide to start your career as an Analyst at Greenhill?

Having been through the recruitment process for multiple investment banks during my final year at university, it was Greenhill’s personable approach and interest in me as an individual outside of my academic achievements and previous work experience that appealed to me. Greenhill take a very holistic approach to hiring, (they are not using a cookie cutter to fill internship/graduate spaces) and as a result I met a diverse group of individuals throughout the internship program all of whom were very impressive and enjoyable to work with.

What were the biggest challenges of getting up to speed?

Aside from maintaining a solid understanding of accounting principles and valuation techniques of which to build upon during training, the biggest challenge of getting up to speed as an analyst at Greenhill is learning to adapt to different working styles across the organisation, something that only comes with time and the internship is the best way to experience and prepare for those differing working styles.

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

Working at Greenhill in small deal teams, you get significant exposure to not only senior bankers within the firm but also C suite executives on the client side of things, this experience brings with it ample of opportunities to take responsibility and demonstrate leadership from very early on in your career. It is this level of client interaction that I find most engaging and rewarding.

What skills would you say you use the most on an everyday basis?

In a job such as investment banking with tight timelines and multiple ongoing projects, meticulous attention to detail, good time management and having an organised and methodical approach to tasks are skills that I have developed quickly and continue to be invaluable in my day to day role as an analyst.

From your current position, what advice would you give to students considering an internship at Greenhill?

Reach out to any of the Analysts currently working at Greenhill via LinkedIn and attend an in-person event, if possible, during this recruitment cycle. Whilst our internship program is unique, the work and academic requirements will be similar at most boutique investment banks. However, it is the culture you experience and people you meet throughout the process which will help you to decide whether you want a career at Greenhill.
