Jack's story
"Lloyd’s is a prestigious company which I still feel proud to say I worked for"
My graduate scheme experience
I was the Lloyd’s’ first actuarial graduate! My scheme consisted of four ~6-month rotations which included three within the Corporation and one in the market.
My first rotation was in the Lloyd’s reserving data team. I learnt the basics of insurance and gained insights into the data the actuaries in Lloyd’s have access to, how it is collected, cleaned and aggregated.
I then moved into the reserving team, the first of the three main actuarial disciplines – reserving, pricing and capital.
For my third rotation I went on secondment to Chaucer to get some exposure to pricing. This gave me an opportunity to not only gain a better understanding of pricing, but also the dynamic of a Syndicate within the Lloyd’s market.
Finally, I joined Lloyd’s Internal Model team within the Capital department. I remained in the Internal Model team, after finishing my graduate scheme, before moving on to Acrisure Re as an Actuary. I spent the majority of my time here pricing Casualty reinsurance programs for clients to markets. This gave me a new appreciation for the importance of all the other factors that go into making a (Re)insurance deal take place beyond the hard numbers.
After getting my fellowship qualification with the IFoA, I moved to Aspen. My role here is a reinsurance pricing actuary, with a focus on Specialty and Property.
The benefits of a Lloyd’s graduate scheme?
- Lloyd’s is world renowned
- An opportunity to see different parts of actuarial
- It provides a unique view of the market
- Great two week introduction to insurance
- Everyone is welcoming
Why Lloyd’s? The prestige, the package, the progress
Lloyd’s is a prestigious company which I still feel proud to say I worked for. The offered a competitive package for my graduate scheme and also set out clear guidance on how to progress in my career there and how they were going to help me achieve that.
My favourite thing about the Lloyd’s Graduate scheme
Cliché as it is – the people. Everyone was so welcoming in every department and willing to help me learn and grow. I still keep in contact with my cohort of graduates and that is partly down to the effort Lloyd’s put into helping us bond.
