Costain is an inclusive and family friendly employer: we believe that everyone matters, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone has the same opportunities to be able to reach their full potential.

We know that by being more diverse, we will be more innovative, have a greater understanding of our clients’ needs and will deliver smarter, more inclusive solutions for them.

Our goal is to have a workforce that is representative of society and our inclusion strategy sets out the actions we need to take to achieve our goal.

At Costain, we currently support a number of inclusion networks. All employees are encouraged to join any of the inclusion networks as active members or supportive allies. Our members and allies have an essential role to play in creating our inclusive and intersectional culture.

Empowering Costain women

We were delighted to be named in The Times Top 50 Employers for women lists in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Being a part of the list for four consecutive years is recognition of the progress we have made to address gender equality in the workplace.

In 2020, Costain was a signatory to the Women in Rail’s EDI Charter, which pledges Costain to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion through a series of targeted actions.

Addressing Costain’s race disparities

In 2020, Costain was one of the first fifty signatories to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Change the Race Ratio. Our pledge commits us to creating an inclusive culture in which talent from all diversities can thrive. This includes increasing racial and ethnic diversity among board members and senior leaders.

We also signed the Business in the Community (BITC) 2020 Race at Work Charter and Costain has committed to publishing its Race Pay Gap Report in 2022.

Including all of the LGBT+ spectrum

Costain is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and committed to submitting to the annual Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI).

Our LGBT+ and Allies employee network is an active group that focuses on widening the support available to underrepresented groups such as bi and trans communities, and those in the LGBT+ community with intersectional qualities.

Ensuring equality for people with a disability

Costain is committed to supporting employees to be at their best and reach their full potential; free from barriers imposed because of physical or neurological difference or long term health conditions.

Costain is a member of Disability Confident and is currently certified as a Level 1 employer. Costain is working together with the Disability and Wellbeing employee Network (DaWN) to work towards achieving Disability Confident Level 2.

Costain has pledged to act on disability inclusion and is a signatory to The Valuable 500.

Supporting our parents and carers

As we respond to and recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, we are committed to promoting and encouraging individuals to work dynamically, recognising that working patterns and behaviours have changed.

Costain is a member of Working Families and is annually assessed against their Top Employers Benchmark.

Our family leave procedures and policies are inclusive and apply to all partnerships. In addition to statutory parental leave, we offer enhanced company maternity leave and shared parental leave.

The Costain parenting and carers employee network provide ongoing support and guidance to all employees who balance working commitments with caring responsibilities.

Connecting our services and services families

Costain is a supportive employer of reservists, veterans, service leavers and their families. In 2018, we signed the Armed Forces Covenant showing our commitment to supporting the employment of service spouses and partners, providing flexibility in granting leave for partners of forces members before deployments and offering additional paid leave for military training. Costain works closely with BuildForce, and we have recently achieved a silver award with the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. Our services community is supported by our Services and Services Families Network (SaSFN) who have expanded the network to include blue light and emergency service people.
