Why launch your legal career at Covington

Why do you think members should launch their legal career at Covington?

Covington offers the opportunity to work within a distinctively collaborative culture with diverse and passionate lawyers who are specialists within their niche areas of expertise. Trainees are part of a select cohort who benefit from a small intake, allowing them to take on early responsibility and work closely with associates and partners. The small intake allows trainees to have open conversations during seat rotations, with the firm trying to accommodate preferences as much as possible.

What are Covington’s core practice areas and what opportunities or skills do trainees gain working in these?

Covington has a unusual combination of strengths in regulatory policy combined with high end litigation and corporate practices. This breath of capabilities offers unique opportunities to trainees to become involved in multi-dimensional matters across several practice areas.

Why should members apply for the Covington Vacation Scheme programme?

Our vacation scheme provides an opportunity to gain a valuable insight into the firm. You will spend two weeks within two different practice areas, undertaking a project within a third practice area. This allows students to gain a taster of the range of areas within which they could practice and the lawyers they could work alongside. We recruit the majority of our future trainees through our vacation schemes.

What core skills do you look for in a successful Training Contract applicant?

We recruit from all degree disciplines, and look for talented and motivated individuals who are dedicated to excellence. We looking for trainees who are ready to take on early responsibility and take ownership, who are intellectually curious, commercially aware and team players.

What can members be doing while at university to create a stand out application for Covington?

Use your time at university to attend open days and vacation schemes, so that you can establish which type of work interests you and the sort of firm you would like to train at. Take opportunities to get involved with societies and sports which engage you. We are looking for intelligent people with passion and personality, who have demonstrated team work and the ability to balance conflicting schedules whilst maintaining their high degree grades.
