Why Impact Investment?
I enjoyed studying Sustainable Finance and Sustainable Development whilst at University but found that few career options that combined the two. Impact investment stands out as the exception. It offers a unique opportunity to address global challenges, such as climate change and social inequality through the deployment of private capital.
Did you do any work experience that you think helped you get the job?
I gained valuable work experience at a sustainability consultancy, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This role helped me to realise I wanted to move towards an investment role where the capital deployed can drive meaningful change. Following this, I worked at a sports investment platform, which enabled me to build some basic financial skills. However, it also confirmed my desire to focus on investment roles that prioritize social and environmental outcomes alongside financial returns. I highly recommend exploring a variety of job opportunities if possible. This approach not only helps in narrowing down what you truly want in a career but also provides a solid foundation of professional experience and essential skills applicable to any job.
What are your main responsibilities on a day-to-day basis?
So far, I have been working in BII’s investment team across our Industrials, Technologies and Services Sector. My day-to-day responsibilities include conducting market research to better understand the competitive landscape, analysing the financial statements of potential investees, and assisting in the preparation of investment memos for our Investment Committee. My work involves a mix of desktop analysis and client interactions, allowing me to engage with a range stakeholders. Occasionally, I also travel internationally to conduct due diligence, ensuring that we have a comprehensive understanding of potential investments and the impact created. I am excited to join the E&S team for my next rotation and help in assessing environmental and social risks posed to investees as well as value-add opportunities.
What sort of training have you received?
I have received a range of valuable trainings across the graduate program. This began with a month of financial modelling training, followed month of Impact investment training that covered how to assess development impact, ESG risks and business integrity risks in potential investments. Since starting the role there has also been a range of technical and personal development training including professional skills and presentation training.
How is your work/life balance?
The work life balance at BII is very good. The culture within the firm emphasises the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal life. The team is supportive, and very collaborative to ensure that everyone has a manageable workload.
