Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
A year after graduating from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Economics and Economic History in 2020, I joined Evelyn Partners in their London office.
What stood out to you about Evelyn Partners when applying for opportunities?
I knew I wanted to enter the investment industry and had a particular interest in working in the private sector where I would be able to build long-lasting client relationships. The role at Evelyn Partners was much more varied than others I’d seen in the sector; instead of having separate roles for Investment Managers, Relationship Managers and Research Analysts, the role combined aspects of all three. Within the finance industry, it’s hard to find opportunities that come with such a hybrid role, so I was instantly intrigued.
How did you find the application process for Evelyn Partners?
The application process felt very personal; with an early-stage telephone interview and timely updates on your application at each stage. From the beginning, they were genuinely interested in getting to know me and the stages of the process were focused on bringing out my best. The process itself was well organised and the HR staff were always happy to help with any queries I had.
What is a ‘normal day’ like as a trainee?
Each day begins with a daily investment briefing from the dealing and strategy teams, giving an update on the macro environment and market movements. Your tasks for the rest of the day can include anything from putting together materials for a client meeting, making an investment proposal for a prospective client to attending a fund update from external fund managers.
How would you describe the culture at Evelyn Partners?
The culture at Evelyn Partners is very collegiate, everyone’s happy to help or just have a chat. The size of the firm allows you to quickly get to know people from across the company and build rapport. There’s a very high retention rate from the grad scheme which I think is largely a testament to the culture at the firm.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who is thinking of applying to Evelyn Partners?
Be yourself! Ultimately, it’s a people-orientated business, and your personality is just as important as your interest and ability.
